Imuran and fever?

I've been on this med for 3 full weeks and for the last

3 days, including today I have a fever.  The last 2 days

I've been taking 2 -8 hour tylenol tabs which seems to bring

it down.  It's almost 100 F, today it was 101. point 1

In the morning and during the day it seems to drop to normal but as

the afternoon goes on and evening comes, it rises again  and I get

sharp pains in my fingers, back and legs and hips.   I'm so

confused with this drug?  I haven't been well since I started it.   I don't know what to do?  Just so happens

it's the weekend and I hope I don't get worse because I don't want

to go to ER.

I don't want to alarm you but I had a similar experience. Only eight days in I started having a stiff neck, sore throat and some horrible joint pain, eventually progressed to a fever. Shaking chills and also a bout of dry heaves. I went to the ER that night, they ran a lot of tests and did a CT scan, my WBC was 4000 so I got antibiotics and went home, for 3 more days I suffered, only drinking liquids. One night I had another bout of dry heaves but couldn't get out of bed, when my wife sat me up I blacked out briefly. The next morning she pretty much forced me to get out of bed since I had been in it since I got the fever. So I sat at my computer desk and passed out again, my wife got me up and we went back to the ER. There I found I was hypotensive, dehydrated, and in kidney failure, my WBC had jumped to 12000... I had septic shock. Another day or two I would have died.

Have you talked to your GI at all since starting? Some people cannot tolerate Imuran. It's possible that is the situation you are in. Just keep an eye on yourself, I had no idea how bad I had gotten.

What is really confusing me is the temp goes down and stays down until later afternoon and I think I'm okay and then it comes up again. I get the chills and stabbing pain. If ER wasn't so busy on the weekend I would go in and have them check my blood. My temperature has risen again, 4th day of this, and my fingers, abdomen and back hurt so bad.

I stopped taking Imuran after I increased my dose.  It threw me into a tailspin.  My GI is going to have a heart attack but I know it was the Imuran.  Doing better since I stopped.

I plan on doing the same soon if these symtoms don't let up. I've had crohn's symptoms before I started the medication, but never have I been this bad for such a prolonged time. I did have obstructions before, they would treat them and I would be feeling better in a couple of weeks. On Monday I will be starting my 4th week and it feels a lot worse than before. My GI is on holidays for 3 weeks It's a little long to wait for him to return. I do have to go for some blood work weekly but don't know what they watch out for? I wonder if there was an infection if they would see it? Hope he left someone in his care to receive the blood results and notify me if something is wrong?

If you have an infection your WBC's will be high, or sometimes too low. As I mentioned in my post my WBC was 4000 the first ER visit, and 12000 my second visit just 4 days later when i was admitted. I was still on prednisone whch probably contributed to the runaway infection that led to my case of sepsis, I would guess you aren't that ill. I thought the Imuran was to blame but my GI was never contacted when I was in the hospital for that week, so when I got home I continued the med, only 3 days later after I came back with Pancreatitis did he get involved and I stopped the Imuran immediately. I have not had a fever since or been sick, and that's been about a year ago.

But if you go for these weekly and they havent seen anything then I'm not sure what else they could look for to see if it was Imuran related.

Thanks, I am keeping an eye on it. So happy for you that you were diagnosed in time before something more serious happened to you. Last night I went through the same pain and fever. This morning my temp is very low. With the way I feel and have been feeling, common sense says I should stop them. Afterall. who wants to inflict unneccessary pain on their bodies. I keep telling myself how can I feel this way, something has got to show up on those tests sooner or later. But day after day I pop the pill waiting for the prize I'm supposed to feel at the end of the trial.
