Hi all,
I'm new here, but I'm basically posting to get some information for my boyfriend, and also the best way to talk to him about Crohn's.
Basically, the story goes, about 18 months ago he was bending over in the car to get something and he felt a 'pop' in his abdomen and started getting searing pain, which got worse over time. Eventually his Mum took him to hospital, they diagnosed him with appendicitis and got him into surgery straight away. However, when they opened him up, they discovered his appendix was not inflamed, but he had visible crohn's disease on his intestines. I know he had a part of his intestines removed, particularly a part which processes b12, so he has b12 shots every few months so he doesn't run low.
Now this is where it gets tricky - Boyfriend is not the best at listening or conveying important information, particularly because he knows I worry about him. What he told me, was that the doctors removed the Crohn's completely, and that he had an extremely rare case that was - what I guess you would call - confined to one area and removed completely. I know that he had quite a few specialists and people fawning over him in intensive care. That's about as far as my knowledge goes on the actual surgery. Now, after reading all the info I can find, I have not found any evidence of this ever happening before, and I'm wondering if maybe he has asymptomatic crohn's?
He had no symptoms before the surgery. He is quite a shy guy, but I know that his BMs aren't quite right. I'm about to get a little graphic now... When I hear him go to the toilet, there is not much to it. Almost like a release and it all comes out at once - I don't think he ever has solid stool, it is always diorrhea(sp) and quite watery. If he doesn't go to the toilet straight away, he gets pain in his stomach. He does not pass gas, as he thinks he will poo himself. He is also lactose intolerant, and the diorrhea and pain worsens with the more lactose he eats. I have tried to suggest going to a stomach specialist (for lack of a better term!) but he is very reluctant.
I don't know what to do.. I feel like after reading all the information, I should be pushing him to get checked out by a specialist. But the more I push, the more he refuses. Does any of this sound typical of crohn's? What should I do?
Thanks in advance :(
