Does having CD and healthcare issues affect your vote? Coming into another presidential election..I have always looked at a candidates stance on health care..I was happy regarding some of the legislation in the Obamacare package especially on preexisting conditions and being able to keep my older kids on my health insurance..I decided over this week to look at foreign policy alittle closer but..?? I have seen more people who get sick, lose their health insurance, and get little to no care..So it is an issue when I look at presidential candidates for me.. yeah

I have had full insurance coverage and no insurance coverage. I have never been denied adequate healthcare because I didn't have insurance.

Not everyone is so lucky. There are many people that cant afford up to $300 for a doctors appointment or $THOUSANDS monthly just for maintenance meds.

I happen to have had an incident where I was left for dead due to I had started a new job and my health insurance had not kicked in yet and needed surgery..I then had to worry about the pre-existing clause on a group plan..I have had continuous coverage since 05' under a group plan..Can I afford health care or can I get health care if I lose my group coverage--no--neither can my husband..I pay $400 a month for a hsa plan with a high deductible offered by my employer and my husband is out of work..You can end up in jail in some states if you are turned over to collections if you can not pay your medical debt..I have a friend who has a brain tumor and can't work. She still does not qualify for the Kansas state medicaid plan..Even with insurance, you pay thousands of dollars for care in this economy. Healthcare reform is something I feel passionate about..There are many very ill people who worry about life time maximums..

My health is far from stable, and since I was diagnosed young-ish (and have been unable to work or go to school), I haven't accumulated all those yummy quarters in the work force that allow people to actually take advantage of the existing social programs. Fortunately, I was -just- young enough to use my mom's quarters, and I've been able to get on medicare. I was without insurance at all for several years, but with the passage of Obamacare I was able to get back on my dad's insurance... but that will only last for a few more years, for me. So getting on medicare was a big deal.

So.. given that my most recent hospital stay ran about $50,000, yeah, health care policy is a pretty big factor for me.

Unfortunately, I have not been following the platforms of the candidates so I appreciate this thread. What are the stances of the candidates in regards to healthcare? I am specifically interested in the insurance aspect. Did you say that your children who are a bit older will be covered by your insurance? Do you know up to what age and what the parameters are? I am particularly interested as I am 22 years old and because of disease, have no job and have taken a short break from school.

Hi Sarah,

As of 2010 one of the following provisions kicked in;
"Extending Coverage for Young Adults. Under the law, young adults will be allowed to stay on their parents’ plan until they turn 26 years old (in the case of existing group health plans, this right does not apply if the young adult is offered insurance at work). Check with your insurance company or employer to see if you qualify. Effective for health plan years beginning on or after September 23."

"There is one temporary exception: Until 2014, “grandfathered” group plans do not have to offer dependent coverage up to age 26 if a young adult is eligible for group coverage outside their parent’s plan."

Well I'm a supporter of Gary Johnson and Datawraith's links to his page sums up his views and mine well.

I am a big suppoter of letting the healthcare companies compete across state lines. I do that in my manufacturing job and it is cutthroat, bare bones fight to the death for jobs on a day to day basis. We run jobs just to get the scrap value off waste material and no real profit at all. My healthcare, on the other hand, went up 32% last year. They could use some stiff competition like I have to deal with and their prices would plummet.

I worry about the ACA. Centrally planned economoies, healthcare, whatever, haven't worked. Too many competing interests, fraud, corruption, etc. Even if it could be centrally planned and administered, Washington owes sixteen thousand billion dollars it can't pay and is stacking up another one thousand five hundred billion every year.

Gary Johnson's chance of winning? 0.00000000000000000000001%. Oh well. wink

It use to be after high school unless your child was a full time college student you could not keep them on your insurance. My 23, 21, and almost twenty year old are on my insurance. My almost 20 and 21 year old dropped out of college, and my 23 year old is not eligible for health insurance benefits with his employer and is a college graduate. The 23 year old has CD. You can't keep them on your dental or vision though..My insurance rates the last few years have gone up..I had to opt for a hsa higher deductible plan after enjoying my cadillac plan for the same price this last year..I have not gotten my money's worth..$400 out of pocket plus on average another $250 per month..My husband is out of work but we do have care and our RXs..I watched health care reform last election, but the only thing I have heard is one wants to Appeal Obama Care?? I got rid of pre-existing coming onto group policies and allowed my kids on my policy..The insurance companies aren't pending my claims for all kinds of nonsense..I know the heath care community is against most reform..

You're not alone Levi with your thoughts on the upcoming elections. I believe people are becoming politically aware due to what's going on in the country. The astronomical debt, the wars, gas prices, outsourcing of jobs and so much more. I truly hope the trend continues of Americans becoming politically aware and active.
