Has anyone had to take off a month or more from work at a time due to a flare? If so, how did you go about telling work, and how did they deal with it?

Are you in the US? If so, you might check your state's disability and medical leave policy. Also, does your company have an Human Resources department? They should be complying with state laws on short term medical leaves and the like.

Depending on how big your company is, and how long you have been there, you can use FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) it covers leave of absence for the care of yourself or a family member among other things. My mom used it last year when I had surgery so she could come stay with my family while I recuperated.

I am currently off work until oct 15 since sept 14 due to a flare and spent 8 days in the hospital from it. I myself have my FMLA and work has no choice in the matter with it. I am entitled to up to 12 weeks a year with it unpaid but they cant fire me due to me being off work.Last year i used almost all of it since i was in the hospital for over a week 5 different times and this year i have been hospitalized over a week twice so they know my situation but it doesnt make it any easier. Legally I can call in and say i am calling off due to fmla reason. They cant ask any questions as to whats going on all they can say is that they need a doctors note.

Well, I work for a large company and they have been great. I have been out of work a total of 11 months over the past 36 months. I used up all my fmla but work still allowed me to use my short term disability program. But, I have been honest with them and the problems that crohn's causes. I suggest you do the same. They are much more understanding when they have a compete picture of our issues. Good luck

I have not had to take that long a leave, but like others here I have been completely honest about my issues with both my direct supervisor and the HR department. Everyone's been understanding.

I am a very hard worker and I do find that putting in long hours and getting good results when I am healthy go a long way towards getting the benefit of the doubt when I'm out, or when I need to leave in middle of day.

I find the personal side of it harder than the legal/HR side at work. People asking personal questions, making assumptions about CD that aren't correct, over-sharing their own GI issues, trying to find a private bathroom, etc.

But overall, my workplace has been very understanding.

I make my own schedule as far as seeing clients, but have to attend mandatory meetings a few times a week. I love that I can just reschedule appointments if I'm not feeling well, but my company is STRICT about those meetings. I was asked to attend a meetin over the phone when I was in labor a couple years ago! I said no rather assertively and the matter was dropped - flowers were sent to the hospital the next day from my company :)

I have not disclosed my medical condition wih work, but will if I need to take extended time off for it. Most likely they would just cut my caseload until I was feeling better - which would mean no pay :(
