Partner has intestinal blockage, may be Crohn's.

My partner has had celiac disease all his life, although wasn't diagnosed until his mid-50s. Now (10 years later) he has significant intestinal blockage in his small intestine (shown on CT scan); colonoscopy was unsuccessful as there is a blockage in his colon as well. Doctor says CT scan and blood work (IBS panel) are consistent with Crohn's but can't rule out a tumor. Wants us to see a surgeon (as soon as biopsy results are back). Now wants him on a low-residue (and of course gluten-free) diet, not easy!

Don't know if I have any specific questions right now but would be happy to chat with anyone who has both Crohn's and celiac. We are apprehensive.

Welcome to the forum. I have inflammatory bowel disease and I'm gluten sensitive (although not Celiac). Glad you found us. I wish your partner the best as he makes his way through all the testing, etc. Low residue and gluten free looks to me like tons of smoothies and ice cream, LOL. Mashed potatoes....eggs....cooked fruit of any kind....

Do a web search on "low fiber diet". It is an easy one. Do a web search on "gluten free diet". That is a tough and expensive one to follow.

What kinds of meds are they putting him on for the inflammation in the upper and Lower GI

The things I think you need to ask are

a- is it active inflammation (which they can treat with Prednisone and other anti-inflammatories,

b- or is it scar tissue from years of undiagnosed Celiac inflammation

He's on Budesonide right now but it isn't really doing the trick (it's helping a little, as did the prednisone in the hospital, but he's still pretty constricted and having nothing but diarrhea).

It is certainly an active inflammation (he's been on a liquid diet since he got out of the hospital - unfortunately ice cream sets him off so frozen yogurt and sherbet it is) but we don't yet know why. And are kind of scared.

Also the instructions they gave us said only non-pulpy fruit, and no skins. So we are going with bananas and juice. His constrictions are quite narrow, apparently, and not much is getting through.

uusuzanne, it's likely that he's become lactose intolerant as a result of the inflammation in his gut. That's why ice cream and other dairy products might give him diarrhea. You can use lactose-free dairy products and/or take lactase enzyme tablets with a diary meal to help in lactose digestion. Most yogurts are lactose free and shouldn't cause issues.

Hi, kazbern, that's a thought although he seems to be ok with milk (not by itself but in soups and mashed potatoes, for example). The symptoms he was getting were a worsening of stomach pain indicating the blockage in his upper gut was becoming more inflamed; he's been having nothing but diarrhea for several months now so anything else is hard to tell. We have an appointment with a surgeon on Tuesday.

I want to suggest you to have a look at, and google LDN, Low Dose Naltrexone. A medicine used in small doses to regulate the immune system to do a better job.

I am also, as Kazbern using gluten free nutrition. It's not expensive at all. I bake my own gluten free buns, they are so tasty, super delicious. I am not a celiac, but I suggest that I have some gluten intolerance or sensitivity. There is a lot of links out there about having this sensitivity when being a crohnie. // the best, Bee
