Last Friday I had a colonoscopy (which showed Crohn's in complete remission, at least for large intestine, yay!) and the prep didn't go poorly at all. I was up all night, but cramping was minimal and it wasn't too bad which I was really grateful for. My acupuncturist (who is also a doctor of Chinese medicine) said that that if around 11p the night before you drink a quart of very warm water with a tablespoon of salt (very salty, I know) and drink straight without stopping (which is hard when you're so nauseous from the rest of prep), it really helps clean you out better than the prep on it's own. It totally worked, my images were squeaky clean and clear.
Anyway, so yesterday (Monday) I had a surgery to put in a draining seton into a rectovaginal fistula. The prep was just to not eat after midnight and use a fleet enema an hour before I left for the hospital. I've used enemas before, both for prep and then I used to use a mesalamine enema, so this wasn't my first time. It was fine going in, but oh my goodness, after about two minutes I had cramped up SO BAD. It burned all the way through my intestines down to through the rectum. For twenty minutes after my intestines were spasming and jerking. When I got to the hospital, they made me do another one and I have an even worse reaction. My pain level hit a 7 and I actually cried in pain for the first time since I was originally diagnosed (and that's with pancreatitis and c. diff. pain). It took them forever to get an IV in to give me pain meds because I was really dehydrated and have lots of scar tissue, and the Fentanyl barely touched the pain. Then they did a local anesthetic with some sedation but I kept waking up and they had to keep giving me more.
I'm going to have surgery at some point in the next few months to actually try to repaid the fistula (do a patch on the vaginal side). I think I prefer the colonoscopy prep over the enema any day. Has anyone else had a reaction like this or have an idea of what could have happened?
