Suggestion for the "best" testing clincs around the Buffalo area

Hello Everyone,

I am a former member, maybe soon to be a current member. I got lucky and had a number of good years after my last surgery. 2 months ago I started getting strange symptoms and my GI gave me a CT scan that showed nothing. Unfortunately the symptoms got worse and I went to emerg 3 times only to be sent home and told that the CT showed nothing. So I've decided that I need more test to rule out everything possible before I accept that this will be my life from here on in.

I am hoping that someone can tell me that the best test to have performed to get to see if I have a partial blockage or adhesions or ...

Also, can anyone tell me the most reputable clinc close to Toronto (Buffalo is pretty close) where I can get the test done. I had an MRI in Buffalo and was told when on the table that MRI do not picture the bowel. Surprise.

Any suggestions ore recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure that I could recommend anywhere. I've heard good things about Mount Sinai's GI dept.

I'm trying to get a referal there myself. Just wondering, are you Canadian or American?

There is a clinic in Buffalo called Buffalo MRI, that gets alot of referals for Canadians, but I'm really not sure how reputalble they are.

Not sure why you were told that MRE will not show the bowel, as this test seems to be taking the place of a CT due to radiation issues.

The best test for you will likely depend on where you're having issues. I would think a colonoscopy/endoscopy would still be the best way.

I'm from Toronto and my gastro is at Sunnybrook and I'm sorry to say that I'm not sure I would recommend him or the hospital. I've been with him for about 20 years and I'm not happy. I've done some checking and it seems that the GI dr's at St. Mike's get rated really highly so I'm trying to get a referral there.

I get the MRI results tomorrow and hopefully they will show something or absolutely nothing. I don't know why the technician at the MRI clinic said that it didn't show bowel issues but she did.

I tried finding reviews on the net regarding testing in Buffalo but I couldn't find anything. I though that since so many of the people on this site are American they might have better information for me.

That would be great if we could compare referrals. Haven't heard of anyone from St. Mikes, but looking forward to hearing how you make out. If we do end up getting to see someone at Mt. Sinai, I'll certainly post or email.

I've also been to see someone at Mt. Sinai and I wasn't  that keen on the gastro's there either. But there is one great surgeon at Mt. Sinai that I would recommend without hesitation. Her name is Helen McRae. I never had so few post operative complications after surgery before her.

I got the MRI results from Buffalo today and am off to see my gastro.

Sounds like we might have alot to discuss.

Surprised that you haven't done well at Mt. Sinai. Glad to get the surgeon recommendation though. I'm guessing she's a colorectal surgeon?

Currently at Macmaster in Hamilton, and while we have confidence in the GI, it just seems so over burdened there. Plus they talk about Remicade and Humira likes it's candy.

Good luck with the follow-up to you MRI. Hopefully good news. Looking forward to hearing about the results.

Hi, I am from Buffalo, and before my third resection, I had an upper GI series with small bowel follow through.

I had a CT scan previously, which didn't show much. The GI series with sbft showed (and I could see on the screen) the narrowing in my intestine. There was just a very thin space for food to pass through (which it wasn't!). I had this test done at Spectrum Radiology in Williamsville (for you this would be 15 - 20minutes from the Peace Bridge. Hope this info helps. Feel better!

I got the MRI results last week and it confirms the CT scan results; there's nothing wrong with me except for a big gallstone. So I'm still at a loss as to what to do and my GI doc has no clue. He told me to go home and eat or I would have to be tube fed in the hospital. Not much of a choice.

Yes, she specializes in colorectal surgery.

Thank you for the information regarding the lab and the type of test that helped determine what was causing you agony. Been there and it's horrible. I hope you're felling better now.

Thanks for asking. I got the MRI results and apparently there is nothing wrong with me. I went and saw my gastro who wondered if he should put me in the hospital and tube feed me, maybe I stupidly said no. I email him last week and told him that I had gained a couple of pounds and asked him if there was anything else we could do to figure out what was wrong with me. He emailed back that I should call my family doctor and get someone to give me a second opinion. I guess that means that he doesn't plan to do anything else and I'm now on my own. I don't know what to do! I called my family dr and I can't get an appointment until Fri at 4:00. Any ideas, I'm at a loss!
