Can you tolerate MSG in any amount? What symptoms, if any, do you have after eating something with MSG?

I usually ask the waitress to skip the MSG but I forgot to make that request today while eating at a new Thai restaurant. Bigggg mistake. It is hard enough for me to get out and about with crutches, especially since I abstaining from my Cimzia so I can get my leg surgery but I am also not feeling well in general so add a little MSG in the mix and watch out! After leaving the restaurant I went on a mission to find some comfortable shoes  and whammo! The MSG hit me full speed while in the shoe store. Lucky for me they had a bathroom in the back of the store although it was marked "employees only" but the nice sales lady was kind enough to let me in, thank goodness. I don't think I could have made it very far.

After this experience, I will never forget to say these words- No MSG please!

I can't tolerate MSG. I believe it should be in the item description of every menu item! I notice my hands and feet swelling the next day. Bad stuff!

My hands and face gets very puffy after a meal with MSG. I usually stick with organics but was craving some Thai food. Never again, at least not from a restaurant.

Aw pmedic, sorry to hear! When did you find MSG to exacerbate your symptoms? :(

Stereo, I have had issues with MSG for about 15 years. Never anything too serious but after my crohns diagnosis I noticed it got worse so I usually avoid it, if possible.

I always wondered if it was a crohns thing...do you have any issues with MSG?

For as long as I've been able to remember, I've been intolerant to MSG, as are many members of my family. We all get severe bloating followed by a bout (or few) of explosive diarrhea. My reaction to it has not changed since my UC diagnosis.

fruitgirl, glad to have over! Yes, that bloat and explosive diarrhea is what I experienced yesterday. It makes me wonder who invented that stuff and decided to put it on food. I need to be more cautious when eating out. It appears to be more common than not in my local Asian restaurants, for some reason.

Hey pmedic...I solved the whole msg thing...I never eat "asian" "middle eastern"(chinese, thai, japanese, korean, indian, etc) or whatever the correct term is for that regional ethnic food. tongue    Seriously, I found I can not tolerate many cuisines-usually due to a high content of vegetables or spice, but I still wonder if the msg isn't part of it too.  I tend toward Northern Euro foods...guess my Irish Scottish heritage feeds me well hehehe.  I did find that some of the packaged foods in my house have msg (add water and heat Knorr chicken noodles and chicken rice kind of things) and they do not bother me...so I am just not sure.

HabsHockeyFan- WHat type of dishes are Northern Euro? I love to try new foods but that is what usually gets me in trouble, ha ha! I have a serious weakness for middle eastern food but we make that at home. My lamb shish kabob marinade recipe is da bomb!

You are so right about packaged foods. They are usually loaded with MSG so I try to avoid packaged foods nowadays but I do like Japanese and sushi when I am not on Cimzia. It has me wondering if they load the sushi with MSG also. Maybe that is why I tend to have issues after eating it.

MSG reminds me of crohns. You just never know when it is going to bother you!

Some restaurants lie about the MSG. If you ask them where their defibrillator is, they will usually check the ingredients for you. My husband experiences serious arrhythmias and tachycardia from MSG and aspartame- both excitotoxins and one of my daughters has the digestive explosion/ headache reaction. It was quite the process to figure out the cause. Specialists wanted to put an ICD in him without figuring out the cause!

Vitamin Grama- Good idea about asking about the defibrillator!!! After I ate that food, my heart was beating a bit irregularly so now I am suspecting the MSG because I had no heart rhythm issues the next day!

Many Dr's simply treat the symptoms and not bother to figure out the cause so I am glad you got to the bottom of the issue so you can prevent a problem before it happens again!
