Has anyone had Ballooning of the Illiam?

Went to my GI yesterday and after a number of obstructions and bleeds over the past 6 weeks he has booked me in for a colonoscopy later this month. In this procedure he wants to insert a balloon the ilium to stretch the opening wider like a stent. This will be repeated over a couple of months.
Has anyone had this done before as my GI says its a relative new procedure.

Hi I never have heard of this being done for Crohn's.

Yep, yep, I have heard of balloon dilatation and it has been used for at least 10 years that I am aware of. I'm not sure of the longevity of the relief it brings but, hey, it is worth trying. It has been suggested for me for my terminal ileum - IF - I agree to a resection of the high grade partial obstruction at my old anastomosis in the mid-ileum.

The thing is they have been wanting to "get at" that terminal ileum area for so long - AGAINST my wishes - that I don't trust them to "just" try or do the balloon dilatation. I suspect I will get the ole "when we got in there we realized we just had no choice but to ..." horsepuckies and that the suggestion of a balloon dilatation is just the ole standby ruse of telling that patient anything to get the patient to do what the doctor(s) want the patient to do when the patient won't agree to do what the doctors want them to do.

If I had thought that I could trust them ... I would have agreed long ago.

Yes, I had a balloon dialation done, about two years ago in my terminal

illeum, I was a bit nervous about it, but i completly trust my GI, they can control how much they stretch it so as to not go to much, If you trust your GI and feel confident that he is experienced in doing it, id say go for it!  My insides were pretty ticked off after the procedure. Not sure if that was from the prep. or the procedure, after a couple of days I felt pretty good, he was able to tell me what the measurements were before then what it was after it was stretched and the opening was made bigger. So for me it was worth it, always wondered why its not talked about more on here and why more people don't do it. I do understand some people are not candidates for it as there are risks!  Good luck and let us know how it goes!

I have heard of this and strictureplasty to open up strictures. A stristureplasy is more invasive, as it is surgery, but the results last longer. I am currently contemplating a strictureplasty, but for some reason my GI and surgeon never mentioned a balloon dilation.

I realize it has been a while, but do you remember what it felt like after your balloon dilation of your ileum? I had one and the pain spiked right after the anaesthetic wore off and I'm trying to get some idea of if this is normal and how long it will be until the symptoms improve.
