Hi

I have been on mezavant for a while now, i started to have a flare up in the past 2 months, i decide to start on 10mg of prednisone and 4 x 1200mg mezavant tablets a day. My GI wants me to go on azathioprine but im reluctant as the side effects sound terrible.

my cramps only happen when I get urgency, and i barely have any BM, its more thick blood that comes out. Will this be enough of a dosage of prednisone? any advice?

been diagnoised with crohns for 2 years now.

10 mg of prednisone sounds like a waste of time, IMO.

Where is your inflammation?

Thanks for your reply. I have gone up to 20mg today. my last colonoscopy showed inflammation on the right side of my colon but it was very patchy.

My only experience with prednisone when i was in hospital and they put me on 80mg, it took me a long time to come off them and im reluctant to do the same again. :(

Have you ever taken Pentasa? This mesalamine might be better for you than mezavent (I am not familiar with this name) because it is effective throughout the bowel.

Most people use prednisone to get out of difficult flares and they start at 40 mg/day. This way you get relief quickly and can taper off as soon as you start feeling better, making your total time on pred shorter. If you start at 10 or 20 and just play around until you feel better, you will probably end up on a longer course of steroids.

It would be better if you had a medication plan and/or dietary approach that kept you out of flares. Mesalamines are not effective for everyone. Prednisone should only be used in an emergency, in my opinion.
