Trying to stop bleeding & inflammation (HELP)

Good Morning All,

This is my first post on this forum. I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis back in 2005. Initially I went through all sorts of meds (Asacol, Colazol, enema's, prednisone, etc.) Ultimately I was able to get my symptoms and severe bleeding into remission with Colazol & prednisone. Went almost 5-6 years without meds and a single flare. Within the past two years I've had some small flare ups but was able to get them under control with a course of enema's. Flash forward to now... Last month I started experiencing symptoms of a flare up and it gradually has gotten worse. I initially started with a course of enema's (mesalamine) but it didn't seem to help much. I'm now on 40mg of Prednisone & hydrocortisone enema's and it doesn't seem to be helping. The prednisone seems to only supress my symptoms during the day until evening hours. That's when I'm frequenting the restroom multiple times (3-5 times mainly mucus & blood).

As for my diet goes I eat very clean (followed a paleo diet for a while). I've cut out beer and any type of alcohol completely. Went on a SCD specific diet for a week and didn't seem to get any results from it. I eat banana's, stay away from dairy, chicken breast, homemade broth (chicken & beef). I am still incorporating some veggies into my broth (carrots, celery, onions). I don't know what else to eat. I'm thinking about incorporating something solid like white rice, quinoa, or sweet potato into my foods to help solidify things. I've also considered cabbage juice which I've read has anti-inflammatory properties. Maybe even slippery elm bark which is supposed to soothe the intestinal walls. I don't really know at this point. I'm just open anything. Thoughts?

Supplements right now I take a multi-vitamin, vitamin d3, fish oil, garden of life primal probiotic.
Medication right now - Lialda (4 tablets), Prednisone (40mg), hydrocortisone enema
Exercise right now - swimming, cycling, running

I'm open to suggestions and advice anyone out there may have.

Thanks for the response kazbern. I've been on pred at 40mg for about 2 weeks now along with with hydrocortisone enema's. I've been on Lialda since last year. I take it daily.

I'll try to go back on a liquid diet again. The only reason I stopped with the SCD diet was because I wasn't seeing any sort of improvement. I'll try again.

Symptoms haven't improved during the 2 weeks on pred. The pred just seems to supress the urgency during the day time or while I'm at work. However when I get home in the evenings the urgency and bathroom trips become very frequent. I'm actually scheduled for a colonoscopy on the 23rd.

I do apologize for posting in the Crohn's forum but I didn't see a UC specific forum. Figured this place would be the best place to ask my questions especially in regards to diet, etc.

You are in a similar situation as myself. My diet is no longer getting rid of my bleeding and now I may need to go onto Imuran or Remicade. The doctors don't think that I will respond to Pred; with the reason being, I was hospitalised recently (with a UC flare caused by food poisoning) and they used it but my bleeding did not clear from the drug.

As natural products go, I don't respond to any of them really well. The diet was my biggest help, and helped me control my symptoms for about 3 1/2 years, but I started bleeding even on my strict low carb. Since then, I am now trying to add more foods simply because the diet is no longer helping.

the natural stuff I tried was-

Golden seal mixed with slippery elm
worm woods
colloidal slivers
cleaners with clay to clear out parasites.
psyllium husk
glutamine powders
I used a program called the Biamonte program (don't try him, very expensive and could not clear any of the mucus)
Gerald Green- his diet worked the best
probiotics enema ones and oral ones
I tried raw foods diet- don't do the Paul Nison thing

So I am afraid I don't have many suggestions left except it is good to keep exercising and stay with your meds. you can try the psyllium husk powder as that does help thicken the stool.


I have tried a whole lot of things and even convinced myself I could get rid of this illness. I have not succeeded. I is weird how some things work for others and then you try them and they seem to work but then stop. I don't understand personally why I got bleeding being so strict with my diet. I really thought I had it solved. I was wrong.
