Can you have Crohn symptoms when blood test is normal?

Hi there.

I was diagnosed with UC and recently had my colon removed. This morning a woke up with drips of blood coming from my rectum. I went to the ER and the colon-rectal surgeon are thinking i was misdiagnosed and that I have CD? I also had post-surgery abscesses which they say is a "characteristic" of CD.

The thing that perplexes me is my blood test came back normal. I'm just hoping it's just some internal hemmies. When I had my surgery the surgeon didn't remove my anus and close it off so I normally get some drainage through there.

Another thought is when the rectum was removed, a stump was left attached to the anus so I may not be completely UC free.

Just wanted to get your thoughts on this. When I had UC my WBC was always high. I'm just very confused and coudl use some help.

Passing blood sounds like you have active colitis in the rectum, Crohn's or otherwise.

Blood tests cannot rule out inflammation, even if they come back normal. Sounds like it's time for a rectal examination to me.

That certainly wouldn't work as my rectum has been removed! lol
I'm hoping it may be internal hemmies.

Oh right. I knew I was tired when I replied, but not so tired that phrases like "when the rectum was removed" would go completely above my head >_>.

lol. I know I'm a bit out of my element here. Hopefully my GI can figure this out.

I do have a "stump" where my rectum was once attached to the anus. Who knows...maybe that part isn't healing right.

you can have crohn's and have normal blood tests. I was that way for years. in fact when I had my blockage and there was a stricture, the blood work showed no inflammation markers. as I was told by my 3 different GI's I have had over the past 25 yrs, crohn's is a very personal disease and acts differently in everyone. Boy is that every true.

Good luck with finding out the source of the blood.

yup my WBC, CRP, ESR and even prometheus 7 tests were normal but I still had Crohn's on biopsy
