Even if Pred helps in the short term, it's worse than useless for the long term. You can't stay on it as maintenance even if it helps to the point of putting you in remission - although technically a Pred-induced remission is not considered a remission by doctors. But getting off it usually makes the symptoms come haring back in full force. Pred is the Catch-22 of drugs.
But probably the single worst thing is that Pred does not heal. I was on Pred for the better part of 18 months, and at 40mg for several weeks right before my operation. (I knew I'd be going straight back on the steroids for the op, so there was no point in trying to wean down beforehand.) Afterwards, the pathology report for my colon showed severely active pancolitis.
Pred had not even touched the underlying disease in my case, and that's not unusual. Hopefully the Humira will kick in for you.
