pain after resection surgery continues

Hello. My daughter had a resection, 4 cm, due to a stricture and an ulcer at the old stoma site (she has a j pouch for 10 years) she is just 6 weeks post op and will see her surgeon again on Monday.

She is still having pain, not blockage pain, but bloating and intestinal pain almost like before the surgery. Her Drs. said at her last visit, 3 weeks ago, that her intestines need to settle down and heal after the surgery, plus she had been suffering with this pain, while away at college for 5 months, before she came home and had the surgery.

Has anyone had post surgical pain for this long, after surgery?

It does take time for the surgical wound to heal, and for the intestines to settle into place. Did the surgeon get all the crohn's or leave some behind? I had a resection but because there was a healthy area from the resection point to another distant point where there was a little bit of a crohn's patch, they left it behind to spare removing a healthy section in between. That area flared soon after but was controlled by medication. Other than that I had a long remission. Hope your daughter's pain will soon settle. Did she have surgery by laporoscopy or regular surgery?

Thank you dorri for responding. The surgeon saw no other signs of crohns. She has also had a small bowel follow through and a double balloon enterscopy to rule out crohns. These strictures at her old ostomy site was all there was so they are still saying it is not crohns. She had it done open again, bikini cut, and the wound is almost closed up now.

May 22 for me,40 CM removed, right side through and through pain, under right ribs burning sensation by incision. Most of the time after surgery very little normal movements, lots of D. Cat scan 'normal", blood test "normal", need to schedule MRE and another scope. It's hard not to want to take pain killers. Just have to keep plugging along.

Just wanted to say I hope she feels better soon. My surgical situation is quite different but I still have phantom pain at times from where my colon was originally. When I cramp it still feels like it's attached to the areas that it no longer is at. Some of mine is also probably due to adhesions. -Joy

Thank you Question E. Sorry you had to go through that surgery. Hope you are feeling better soon.

My daughter can't take pain killers since she had a neurotoxic incident 2 years ago so she is just taking extra strength Tylenol, but a couple of times a day. She says it doesn't do much at all for the pain, and she watches closely how much she is taking.

Thank you JaSanne for the well wishes. I hope your pain gets better soon also.

My daughter is just so stressed because after this July surgery she never felt any relief from the pain she had prior to surgery and she had just had another surgery in Jan.

Hope the Dr. has some idea.
