GI wants to start me on biologics only if ...

Last Thursday, I went for the last infusion of Nexium iv, Visceralgine and Zofran for my stomach flare up . Some time after it started flowing in my veins, I felt severe pain in my stomach. I asked them to stop it. When the ER doctor saw that the injections were infused in glucose, he told me it was wrong and it should have been infused in a saline solution?? Things deteriorated afterwards. I saw my GI and he prescribed me more iv injections: for 5 days a daily Nexium injection and an every 12 hr a Zantac injection. When I mentioned that the dermatologist confirmed that I have psoriasis, he told me that he would reconsider my Crohn's treatment. He said that this psoriasis issue could become more aggressive and hence I need to be put on biologics to target both Crohn's and psoriasis. Accordingly, Entocort will be withdrawn.
I contacted the GP as I need to have approval for getting Remicade. She told me that the insurance company won't give it to me unless there is a panel for this. This panel might not accept sponsoring such an expensive drug.
The problem is I think I'm fine on Imuran but my GI is afraid that my psoriasis would deteriorate. I called another dermatologist to get a second opinion and I should return in a week to my GI for him to reevaluate my condition.

I think biologics are a good idea. With the numerous posts you've had from so many problems, I think you should give it a shot.

It's like when you insist you can't do without Entocort, then post a few days later about having a massive flare-up with abdominal pain, diarrhoea, etc., despite being on the Entocort :/

To be honest, most of what you post about is beyond my ability to help with. I really don't feel like I understand your case. But I have suggested biologics to you in the past; absolutely think you should give them a shot.

Minnie, is your hesitancy to try biologics because of the potential cost/annoyance with insurance or because biologics are a potentially scary/big step in terms of medication?

I only ask because I refused biologics for years until this April and when I finally started Remicade, I felt pretty silly for being so against them all that time. Now, in the spirit of full disclosure, Remicade has not been the wonder drug for me that it is for many, but I may try another biologic (e.g., Humira) to try to get things under control. The important thing is that with multiple related auto-immune conditions like Crohn's and psoriasis, biologics are often the best treatment to knock out both.

This, of course, is just my opinion. I really hope you start to see some relief soon, no matter what choice you make in treatment.
