I'm wondering if it's okay to smoke weed while taking remicade and methotrexate? I know you can't drink on methotrexate and I don't drink as it is so that's not a huge problem but I do like to smoke weed and it also helps with my symptoms. Just wondering if it's safe to do while taking these medications?

Nice that you're going to try weed. I've heard a lot about it. I watched a video the other day on youtube. It was recommended to vaporize the weed, collect it and make tablets. The tablets can be consumed three times a day before or after food. The reason to make tablets is, when you consume it, it will be directly absorbed by the intestine. Unlike smoking, which first goes through the lungs. Very little of it will be available directly to the intestine.

Do you know how long do you have to take it to achieve complete remission? Do you again flare up when you stop consuming weed?

I make a marihuana tincture. They say that eating it is better. The liver breaks it down differently then smoking it.

After a week on the tincture, I had less urgent BM's with less or no mucous. Also had increased appetite and energy.

I am part of an organization in Toronto that dispenses cannabis.

I'll have to check out that video. Sounds interesting. For your questions though, I've never used marijuana as a medication. I would use it recreationally but it definitely helped ease the pain before I knew what I had and was placed on medicine.

I use a vaporizer and also smoke it out of a pipe, I find no difference of how it helps from doing it either way...it would be nice to find a way so that it doesn't affect my brain because I don't like the stoned feeling but I love how it makes my body feel better and has been helping with symptoms.

It actually feels like the rectovaginal fistula is getting better from it too, I'm passing less and less gas from my vagina (My GI appointment isn't until Dec 2 and I just couldn't bear the excruciating pain I had been in since early September so Oct 15 I started smoking it and within a day I was already feeling better, totally shocked and thrilled. I only smoke a tiny bit (not even a whole joint) 2 times a day, once early to mid day and then again just before bed...I can't drive once I get stoned so I need to figure out how to reap the benefits without getting goofy.

So wish I could try this. It's supposed to be medically legal where I live, but no safe legal way of getting it yet. I've heard a lot of good things.

How does medical marijuana work? Do I need my GI doc to approve or see a different doctor? I don't live far from DC and they opened a few medical dispensaries this year.

In Canada, the way it works is you can get the forms online, fill them out (and have your doc fill one out) and send it in to the government and wait for approval, which so long as your doc fills it out properly then it should be approved.

The lady in the video Shona Banda has been taking marijuana for 1.5 years. She says in the video that she has relapse, if she doesn't take it for a while. Don't get addicted to it. You'll be stoned after taking it, making it difficult to work and do anything.

Have you tried SCD or paleo diet? Many have had good results from it. Marijuana is the last option for me.

Over time, your body/mind will adjust to the being stoned part, so you will be able to function without being stoned...you just have to hope I guess, that it will continue to have the same positive effects for your symptoms without having to increase the amount of mj you smoke.

What happened that we can now discuss the dreaded MJ plant on this board?

I am beyond pleased!! We need to step outside the lines drawn by big pharma care and look into those herbal / natural options.

It can be a great option for some. I think Peter made a very good decision to open this to discussion. I highly doubt MJ interacts with any of the medications you may already take. Although it is true some people will have adverse reactions with it, like any medication. For example while one person may become very relaxed (most common) Another person may experience panic (less common). I really think it is great this topic is open for discussion as for many it is a great add on treatment.

for me i would only use it if i was dying. if your in excrutiating pain and you can't stand it any longer then i think it'd be fine, but if your just useing your disease to get high you got some serious **** problems. medical marihuana my a**

OMG Rango,

It took a lot of severe pain for a month straight before I broke down and gave in to trying mj to see if it would help in anyway, it did, and I'm not thrilled about the stoned effect but you're gonna sit here and judge someone like me that has never been in remission in 23 yrs since getting sick with crohn's because I'm either allergic or non-responsive to the crap meds they offer for it????

You should really try thinking before you hit the submit button...rather than making a blanket statement about people with chronic illnesses using mj with success to manage their disease better.

Not only does it aid with pain, it can aid with symptoms, in a study, 6 out of 11 CDers that were told to smoke 2 joints/day went into full remission after 8 weeks, the remaining 5 all noted some improvements with their symptoms. I don't even smoke 2 a day.

Also, how long has your head been in the sand?? Ever heard of government approved medical mj????

first of all i never touched a drop of alcohol cus im 16 years old and i wouldent throw my life away and become an alcoholic to cover up my pain. second of all i know exactly what medical MJ is, just because you put medical in front of it doesn't make it right, if you read my post i said " if your in excrutiating pain and you can't stand it any longer then i think it'd be fine". i guess it's just how i've been raised and what my grandfather taught me, he was stabed by a man who was high on drugs(luckly he survived) and any drug that makes you high is a bad drug to me no matter what the circumstances. sorry if i offended you but i'm sure theres others who would support what i'm saying. it's just how my moral standards are and i plain out dont believe in drugs that make you high, they can make you do things you never wanted to do.

Hahaha, I have to agree with pb4. Marijuana really does have less side effects than many of the "legal" prescription pain medications. I just spent 6 weeks weaning off high doses of Percocet that all my doctors were encouraging me to take regularly leading up to and following my surgery. The physical withdrawal from that was no joke - - And I would venture a guess that someone with any type of addictive personality or past substance abuse problems would have difficulty coming off narcotics once started. On top of that, narcotic pain relievers are constipating and often more hurtful to people with IBD than helpful. Not many other options out there for when your in severe pain from this disease and need to have some semblance of a life.

Unfortunately marijuana is not legal in NY, medical or otherwise. I still have tried it (and don't really enjoy it at all) and haven't noticed it helping with my pain - but that may be different when you can obtain it legally and get a certain strain meant to target pain.

theres a difference between a pain reliver and a treatment for your disease, the difference is one covers up your pain so how would you be able to tell if you actually feel better when your always high? and the other is straght and simple the treatment either works or it dosen't and you don't put yourself in the position of becoming a weed addict.

I've been in the position where I would do anything to relieve the pain. Don't begrudge people their choices in legal pain relief.

Please keep the discussion to the medical uses and refrain from personal attacks on people's choices.

From July 2012 to February 2013 my crohns was so bad that I was rolling in pain every day. Could not work, sleep just pain pain and more pain. I had a scope done and the doctor said it was very bad and that I would need surgery. I decided to try MJ and immediately for the first time in 8 months had no pain. I didn't like the smoking part and the damage it could do to my lungs, nor did I care for the high but for the first time in 8 months I was pain free. The second day again I tried mj and after day 3 my stool went from liquid to formed. I have been diagnosed with crohns for over 10 years and my doctor said I would likely never have formed stool again. I started researching MJ and Crohns and found out it is the CBD that that helps because people with crohns have 2 times more cannabinoid receptors then the average person. I have had normal stool since and symptoms have disappeared. It is interesting that in Israel they have done testing with crohns and MJ and have developed a plant that is very high in cbd and almost no thc.
I suggest anyone taking this path look into Rick Simpson Oil. I take my dose before bed and am asleep before the THC takes its effect. While I sleep the CBD is working on the gut and the next day wake up refreshed with a very good sleep and am completely pain and high free. Before I used to wake up so many times in the night and had a hard time getting back to sleep.
Due to my improvement and my crohns now in remission, the surgery is no longer necessary.

Hey everybody, can we all please lay off of this kid? Read his original post and see what he *really* said. He's 16! 16 and doesn't want to do MJ, even for medical purposes and you're offended and feel like he's "judging" you? Come on.

God bless him that in his young life he hasn't had to deal with the kind of pain that just might make you want to smoke MJ. Be kind and understanding. He only said what HE wouldn't do. And you and I both know there are plenty of people who use ANY excuse to get "medical" marijuana. If your motives for smoking are true, then you have no cause for offense. And having traveled a longer road than this kid, you can surely be patient with his response. I applaud his moral standards. I hope none of us ever has that much pain, but for those of us who do and can find relief in MJ, then good. For those who choose not to, fine also. I know it's a touchy subject, I just think we can consider each poster's background and why they feel the way they do. Go easy on the kid.

i'm honestly not judgeing or begrugeing anyones choices of treatment here people. it just a personal preference and opinion. from what i learned on this post is that people who smoke weed are very touchy. you can hardly call it a personal attack when i don't know the person and alls i did was give you my opinion, America's a free country and i have the freedom of speach so GET OFF MY BACK.
