This is the third time I come down w a cold this autumn though I've taken the flu vaccine. I know that the flu vaccine is intended for influenza but things are very difficult this year. I've just finished a round of ABX and I'm very sick. Yesterday I kept throwing up all night like 13 or 14 times though I took a Zofran injection. Today, I have fever, a sore throat and a runny nose. Should I repeat the ABX? I have 7 pills left. My GI is abroad and I don't know what to do.

Can you go to the equivalent of an urgent care and get a throat culture? Without confirmation of a bacterial infection, I am concerned that antibiotics may make your situation even worse. Be careful not to get dehydrated. If you are vomiting that much then maybe you need to be admitted to the hospital for IV hydration and anti-nausea meds by IV. So sorry you are sick again!

The flu is viral, so antibiotics wouldn't help with it. The flu shot won't do anything at all for colds. Colds usually don't have a fever unless it's turned into an infection, and antibiotics don't do much for a cold anyway. It's possible to have influenza in spite of the flu shot - I got it last month, four weeks after getting the flu shot.

Why do you still have antibiotic pills left? Usually you get prescribed the exact amount you're supposed to take and you take all of them. Stopping early, even when you feel better, can make it come back and worse than before and resistant to those antibiotics.

Also, you should have a PCP that deals with things like this. My GI would never work with me about a cold (unless I happened to be in there at the time or my PCP was gone or something).

scifigal is absolutely correct, colds are viruses and antibiotics will not do anything for it. If you develop a fever, cough up discolored mucous, then you need to see your general practioner to be evaluated.

Do not treat yourself with prescription meds until you know what the problem is. Also, she was correct about you needing a general practioner for these types of problems. If you don't have one go to urgent care or a walk-in clinic if you must.

Also, when out in the public, wash your hands or use hand sanitizer EVERY time you touch a door handle, pen, credit card scanner, etc. Cold viruses can live on these surfaces for quite sometime.

Dear all, thank you very much. Well, it seems I had complicated things before I saw your posts. I took the rest of the antibiotics and D hit. I was in class today and I couldn't use the bathroom immediately. After an hour when it was possible, I called a friend and asked her to substitute me. having d and not being able to use the bathroom is a real torture. I think I have to see the GP now and try to sort things out before things get complicated.

Please go to your doctor this afternoon and be open about what your symptoms are and how you tried to treat them.

Myself09, thank you very much. I really appreciate it. I saw the GP and she said I have an infection which necessitates I take the antibiotic. I also took Imodium. We have to put things at bay until my GI returns next week.
