My daughter (17 years old) was diagnosed with Chron's disease a few years ago after one instance of bloody stool. She has been on Asacol for the past 4 years. Her last MRE and Colonoscopy showed active Chron's disease. Thickening of the wall in the small intestine. She has had no symptons in the past year. Her first doctor is sure that she should go on Humira. Her recent doctor agrees that 6MP is not as high risk. She wants to put her on 6MP. I am very confused. Everything I read about non-symptomatic Chron's states that if you are non-symptomatic you have a mild case. Why the advanced drugs then?

I put my CD in remission 7 years ago by changing my diet to follow the SCD diet. The only drug I take is pentassa, which is similar to ascol.   Since being on this diet, I have not had one symptom or problem from cronhs.   My last colonoscopy last year found no active disease in my colon where I use to have it.   Why don't you read the book "breaking the vicious cycle" which talks about the SCd diet.  This diet seems to work best in newlly diagnosed people who don't have a lot of damage from this disease yet.

if its a very mild case of crohns you could try herbal supplements and some diet changes, ive heard about acupuncture but havent experienced it myself. hopefully she can find something that works. you usally want to wait for biologics till milder treatments have been exhausted. im wishing her luck and hope she finds a healing path that works for her. :)

I have had Crohns for 40 years. I am usually asymtomatic until damage has occurred and it's too late to prevent. I have inflammation and a bad stricture right now and have no symptoms. I would definitely pay attention to what the tests show and try to prevent any further damage. They didnt have all these options in my day but I would take advantage of them today. Just my opinion!

If she has active disease and there is thickening in her intestinal wall, damage is being done. If the inflammation is left unchecked, that thickening can get so bad that nothing or very little will be able to pass in her small intestine. That can cause an obstruction that often ends up needing surgical intervention.

The Asacol is obviously not working. Your daughter needs additional/different medication. As to which one, that will be a decision made by you, your daughter and the doctor.
