I assume you are referring to SCD yogurt.
Only plain Dannon is legal. Full disclosure I have never used it.
I use a starter I buy from Custom Probiotics. It works great, and can be kept in the freezer for a long time so I always have it on hand. Also, although it costs $50.00 I believe it is the cheapest on a per quart of yogurt basis (and for those who are wondering I do not own or get a kick back in this company. In fact the owner is a bit of a pain, but I still buy from him for the above reasons)
I have not tried the Dannon approach as I always assume that I would use a bit and then I would have to throw out the rest. And the other downside is everytime I want to make yogurt I would have to go to the store
Others use Yogourmet. I have tried this, but it is a lot more expensive than Custom.
I can tell you that Yogourmet and Custom taste a bit different, and some will tell you they like one better than the other. I think it is what you get used to and I will only notice the difference if I change form one to the other.
What ever you choose please make sure you only use a legal starter.
Also, this yogurt is easy to make if you know how and closely follow instructions. If you do not you will not get what you are looking for.
For example, it took me two years and the purchase of 3 yogourmet yogurt makers before I stopped being pig headed and tried the oven method. It works perfect every time. No special machine and I can make as much as I want. Highly recommended. Others use a cooler with similar results, but I could not get the right set up with a cooler.
