Recent Crohns diagnosis

Hi all, I was recently diagnosed with Crohns on 4/26. I am confused and afraid. I've had a CT scan at the emergency room on 4/26. My gastro did a colonoscopy 2 weeks ago and told me I have inflammation in the colon and esp the small bowel with constriction in the ileum. Yesterday, I had a small bowel follow thru. I took prednisone for 2 weeks after the emergency room visit and antibiotics and my symptoms improved greatly. I am currently taking Entocort, but my doc says it's not a long term solution. I had bloodwork done yesterday to determine if I'm eligible for Humira or Remicade.

My doctor has recommended a strict diet eliminating all raw fruits and vegetables (I am vegetarian) and am having a difficult time finding foods that agree with my colon. Any suggestions on diet would be greatly appreciated.

Your doctor has recommended a "low residue" diet for you because of the stricture in your terminal ileum. The small bowel follow through should be able to show the diameter of the ileum's open space, which will help your DR determine whether you are a candidate for a resection. If the ileum is too constrained, you could have a complete blockage and end up in emergency surgery. Thus the recomendation to avoid foods with fiber. Soft foods and highly processed foods are much easier for the bowel to pass and pose less risk for obstructing your small intestine.

These dietary restrictions are hopefully not forever. The prednisone, entocort and then maybe the biologics may be able to reverse the damage done in your small bowel. Only time will tell.
