I have a new proctitis flare up. The typical symptoms are there: tenesmus, d w/o passing much of stool, swollen rectum, abdominal cramps and nausea. After 3 years of having proctitis, I still can't tell what is the proper treatment I need. I'm applying pentasa enema before bedtime. Inserting the enema is very painful and I feel that down there it's narrow and while I'm taking it, I have a throbbing sensation. Sometimes I can't hold it in there and rush to the toilet.
Treatment differed before between budesonide enemas, pentasa enema and pentasa suppositories. I know that what I need at the time being is suppositories so that I do not irritate my rectum but I can't tolerate suppositories. Whenever I take them, I have severe cramps and then d follows. If I force myself to keep the suppository in there all night, in the morning I have d and nothing of it is absorbed. My GI is sometimes understanding and other times forces me to take it.
I haven't seen him yet. I have an appointment next week to tell him about my foot deformity and ask about his future plans of treatment.
I need too to find a new colorectal surgeon. My current one was not welcoming, dk why. He didn't examine me and said you have rectal inflammation. That was 3 weeks ago and I didn't become any better. I have to find someone else who is merciful in performing the rectal exam. In the last 3 years, I have seen a lot of surgeons who made me scream during the rectal exam. My previous surgeon did not. Now, I'm dreading seeing a new surgeon though I know I have to as long as I am suffering from proctitis and stenosis.
Are there other meds out there apart from steroid and mesalamine enemas and suppositories?
