Severe gas pains

So after having my surgery, took everything out, sewed up the rectum and permanent ileostomy, I've been having severe gas pains. They started two days ago, 3 weeks after surgery. I've never had gas pains before, so I'm assuming I'm having all of the normal symptoms: severe pain, pain with pressure on the stomach, burping, lots of stomach sounds and normal ostomy output.

My doctor said they were normal and to expect them. But the pain is severe. I was on the verge of passing out yesterday. If I'm out and they happen, I'm literally incapacitated.

What is everyone else's experience with gas pains? How long did they last? Have you found any remedies or anything that helps them?

I would appreciate any and all thoughts. I feel kind of like in between the proverbial rock and a hard place, as there's nothing much I can do.

There doesn't seem to be any source for my gas. I've woken up in the morning with it. As my surgeon told me, the gas pains just come with the territory of the surgery. But they're so darn painful!

I've never had constipation problems, especially not with the ostomy. I've been on fentanyl patches and dilaudid for years and have never presented with any problems. The only painkiller that ever bound me up was oxycodone, early on in my disease.
