I had two massive rectal fistulas when I was diagnosed with CD in the colon and in the small intestine in 9/2007 . I did some research and I went on the SCD diet, and by 3/2008 both fistulas were completely healed and closed up, and all my other CD symptoms were gone as well, and I have been complete remission ever since. The only drug I take is pentassa.
My GI wanted to put me on remacade since he said fistulas as large as I had can not heal without drugs. I decided I didn't want the risk of the side effects from taking hard core drugs, and so I went on the SCD diet and I took pentassa which has very liitle side effects.
The SCD is not something that works overnight. It might take you months before you see changes. It also takes fanatical dedication for it to succeed.
I followed the diet with fanatical 100% dedication, and within two months, all the mucus and the blood were completely gone from my BMs. By 5 months, both rectal fistulas were completely healed up and the setons had to be removed. The surgeon said he had never seem fistulas as large as I had heal without drugs like remicade, and told me to just keep doing what you are doing. To this day, I am still symptom free and in complete remission, and I still follow the SCD diet, but not quite as strick as before.
I suggest you read the book "breaking the vicious cycle" which goes into detail on the theory of the SCD and how it works .
