Hi,

After a colonoscopy/endoscopy 8 days ago, was told I had ulcers characteristic of IBD and the doc said he suspected the biopsies to show Crohn's. In those past 8 days, I've lost weight from 103 to 98 pounds this morning. Not too bad, I realize, but in the months where I've been in pain, I had started at about 120 (I'm 5'6"). I can't eat because it causes severe pain. I've thrown up everything I've eaten in the past 2 days (with the exception of a Popsicle). It is very sharp, kind of like kidney stones in my gut. I'm extremely exhausted and a friend suggested going to the ED, but I'm hesitant to do that. Anyone have any suggestions? Please! Anything, I'm so out of my realm here, I just can't think. Thank you.

Go to the ER. If you're vomiting and losing weight that fast, you need to be treated quickly. You can call the after hours line of your GI, but I'm sure they'll tell you to go to the ER.

In your last post you mentioned that your appointment was two weeks after your scope. You've waited out the first week without eating anything. Why have you not called your DR to talk about how bad you are feeling? Please, call your DR. If you cannot reach anyone on the weekend, go to the ED.

I did call the GI office, but never got a return call. I only saw an APRN in the GI office once, I suppose that might not qualify me as a true patient. I guess I'm not sure what the ED can/will do; I went twice in September in severe pain and got some drugs and sent home. I might have to go, but I'm not looking forward to it.

Your job as a patient is to communicate clearly and to be your own advocate. You were the recipient of an invasive diagnostic procedure - I think that qualifies you as a patient!

You wrote that you haven't eaten for 2 days and that you have sharp pain in your kidney region. I think it is time for the ED. They will rehydrate you and probably do some imaging of your kidneys and or abdomen. Go.

Just want to echo the sentiments of the others here. You need to get to the ER. You will also need to contact your GI and really lay it on thick.

I've found that often times when dealing with Doctors or ER's, you unfortunately have to be really emphatic about what's going on with your body. I'm not advocating lying, but you really have to be direct and firm.

If you're throwing up after eating, that might suggest a blockage. The ER would treat that immediately, and then page an on-call GI.

Yeah, agreed with what everyone has said. Mention your recent colonoscopy, that it showed ulcers, and the doctor thought it was Crohn's. With a suspected case of Crohn's, the ED should take you more seriously and hopefully admit you. You sound in a bad way.

Thanks, I went to the ED today. I just posted my experience, so I won't belabor that here, but the upshot is, they didn't believe that I was in pain even though I told them I can to eat, can't drink, lost 5 pounds in the last 10 days, and feel like I'm having labor pains in my stomach. I was begging for help, but they essentially denied it. I ended up leaving and I will never go back there again, and I work there and h ave for 12 years next month.

The first thing that came to my mind, too, is an obstruction, especially considering that I can't even pass any gas. But all they did was draw blood. They didn't even do any kind of exam (other than listen to my heart and lungs). This was done by a PA.

But thank you all for listening to me, replying, and just making me feel not so alone. I'm hoping I will be able to get through until tomorrow when I see my regular GP.

I have had dark bleeding in my stool twice in the last couple of months which resulted in hospitalization to get blood. I have had a colonoscopy and and endoscopy, then a ct scan. I was told they saw a thickening in my small intestine. Does anyone know if this is typical of Crohns? I've also lost 10 pounds in the last 6 months. Plus I've had a kidney transplant and I'm on anti-rejection meds. Praying it's not lymphoma.
