Dynamic pelvic MRI to detect fistula: how does it feel?

Saw my GI to find a treatment fo constant c. However, today I got d after months of c. I mentioned that the colorectal surgeon told me before I have a narrowing in my rectum w a length of 4 cm and width 0.8 adjacent to an anal fissure. He said it could be a stricture and ordered a pelvic MRI: a dynamic study. I told him I had a normal MRI but I couldn't bear the coil they put on my abdomen and did it w anesthesia. He said you're right to be asked to be sedated and asked where was the coil, I said on my abdomen. He said it wasn't endorectal. I panicked and reminded him I loathe CT enterocolonography but he said no problem. I understood it includes a colorectal coil. So, how does it feel? Can I be sedated during this procedure?

Hello, I had this done yesterday... Yes, I felt panicky at times... But I just tried to visualize happy things to get through... Kept my eyes closed and tried not to think about being inside.. The coils weren't what I thought. I laid on top of one that was under bum up to ribs and then one on top.. Not too heavy at all. And yes they strap you in.. They inject Buscopan at the beginning and then halfway through along with the die. Also give you a button to hold onto in case you feel you need them to stop right away... I got through just fine... Hope you can to if need be.. I kept asking myself while I was in there if I would prefer a colonoscopy over this? LOl.. Probably not! Not sure about sedation.. No one offered? Happy thought.. Wishing you health... :)

Dawnc77, thank you very much. Glad your MRI went on smoothly. Wasn't there any endoanal coil as my GI's assistant mentioned? Is there any kind of preparation; I won't tolerate drinking any preps like those of the CT and colonoscopy anymore.

Yes there was what they called a coil on top and bottom... But it was more like a thick piece of rubber.. Not a big deal actually... And yes you have to drink some stuff tht just tastes like sugar water every 20 minutes for 1 hour before... Then they give you buscopan to stop your bowels so they can get the pics they need...

So not too bad... But I will warn you that once all is said and done when you get home don't be surprised if your bowels wake up and pretty much have liquid diarhea for the rest of the day... Sorry TMI I know but just want you to be prepared...:)

Dawnc77, thank you. Well, I'll start panicking as I loathe any rectal tests. I'm afraid this sugary stuff is mannitol. I have an extremely bad experience with it; no matter I take a zofran injection before swallowing it. The last time I drank it, I threw it up forcefully and stayed throwing up nonstop for 5 days though my GI put me on zofran injections every 8 hours then.I'll negotiate being sedated.

sorry for asking a question in an existing thread but I'm getting an MRI next month for fistula issues. Is this an invasive test? I HATE rectal examines. In fact last time I was at the hospital, the doctor wanted to examine me w/ a bunch of Fellows with him. One doctor was very pretty... I told the main doctor, "nah I'm good"

No MRI is not invasive... You are in a hospital robe... Inside a machine.
