My daughter does not have Crohn's but she has chronic allergy/asthma symptoms and "idiopathic angio-edema" meaning she gets these bouts of severe lip swelling for no apparent cause. Her allergist did tons of blood and allergy testing, and although those tests came out normal, he strongly believes she has an auto-immune disorder. When it happens severely, she needs to take high dose prednisone, benydryl, and zantac all at once. She has been in the ER several times needing IV steroids in the past, but now she is better at recognizing it coming on. My guess for you is that it is either related to Crohn's flaring, or you have another associated auto-immune disorder. You might check with your GI or allergist but my daughter takes 6omg of Pred for three days and it usually works well, and then she can discontinue the steroid. When you take Pred short term like that, you don't have to taper. She HATES the Pred, so sometimes she just tries Benedryl alone and has had success at times with this, but she often needs to give in and take the Prednisone. She also breaks out in severe hives, especially when under stress....it alll seems related, but we don't have any clear answers....so for you, a hit of a few days of Prednisone might knock it out....but of course, see what your docs think. I hope this helps.
