My surgeon always stated the perianal abscess was just bad luck, it happens! The problem was it was not treated in time it built up over 5-6 weeks, resulting in emergency surgery and sepsis despite going to doctor 4 or 5 times, out of hours doctors twice and A@E 3 times nobody picked it up. Probably seen by 10-14 Doctors and not one of them diagnosed the problem, the nearest anyone got was to state it was a fissure and gave me Instiligel to inject x 3 daily (which really fed the abscess). A total disaster!

At least now 9 months later I am pretty fit and the fistula has shrunk and there is no discharge whatsoever.

Yeah, mine did that too.
Ruptured in August, tons of drainage, just like milking a cow, and then a month or so later, it closed up and stopped draining.
I got insurance and saw a GI in early December and she didn't believe me when I said it closed up.
Of course, it reopened again and stayed open until Remicade closed it up in July.
And then it reopened again in January 2011 and it's been open ever since.
My point is that a fistula can stop draining, but the tract remains, and will drain again if enough inflammation occurs.
But, of course, this is for Crohns.
