I had filed for disability. Today I received a letter stating that I was denied. It says that my crohns isn't debilitating enough. Ugh. Just wondering...how bad does it have to get before I'm eligible for ssi?

Most people who apply for disability get denied the first time around and need to appeal. I suggest that you get a disability lawyer. They do take a percentage of your disability payment, but you don't have to pay them until and unless you get approved. I have never needed or applied for disability but I hear it is quite a difficult process

Hi Bucko. Sorry to hear you were denied, but as gumby says that is usually the first answer to an application. Before you pay a lawyer, make one call to your insurance carrier (assuming you have one and are in the US). Some carriers hire outside companies to data mine and help them find people that should be on dbl instead of a health plan. It can't hurt to call your HR or the case management folks at the carrier to see if they provide this assistance. it most likely would cost you nothing as this enables them to move you out of a risk.

I am sorry to hear it. I do not understand what they would qualify as "debilitating enough". Active inflammation in the GI tract is pretty darn debilitating in my opinion. I agree with gumby, appeal. Getting a lawyer would be great, but losing a part of the small amount they give, could make it much harder to live on. It's really not fair...

Habshockeyfan...I have medicaid for insurance. I was talking to a lady who has bi polar. She got ssi the first time she applied and is allowed to work part time earning up to $580 and still keep her disability. Plus she lives in income based housing (only pays $200 for rent). At the end of the month she has plenty of money. On the other hand. In the past year I've spent a total of 7 weeks in hospital and numerous days in the er. And was denied ssi. If I was able to work I would get fired for having to miss too much work. Plus I have a son that I should have applied ssi for when he was born. Guess I procrastinated. It's just frustrating how much crap you have to go thru with crohns. I don't think the general population understands how Debilitating it can be.

The whole system is so messed up! I'm sorry you are dealing with that. I know how upsetting it was when I got diagnosed in 2012, due to the pain and depression of it all I lost my job and stopped going to school so I lost all insurance, I was trying to get medicade and was told I would not be approved until I was on disability, and told I couldn't get approved for disability until I was out of work for at least a year! I really hope it has changed, I know I do get medicade now. Good luck!
