Hi everyone, this is my first post but I've read quite a bit here before. I have Crohn's and this morning I woke up to a flare. Normally with my flares I have some cramping and diarrhea, and this is similar but the pain is much worse. I have to use the bathroom every 45 mins to an hour or so. While I'm using the bathroom the pain is super intense, the worst I've had with Crohn's. When I'm done it subsides somewhat and then eventually goes away, only to come back when I next have to use the bathroom. I've never had an obstruction but I don't think it's that because there's stuff coming out (yellow green now, sorry if TMI).

I'm just not sure what the ER can even do for me. Since the pain isn't constant and just started this morning, is it even worth it to go? Or should I go because it's so intense? I just restarted Pentasa (I had to stop because of kidney problems) and I finished a course of steroids (budesonide) two weeks ago. My CRP blood work was normal just a little while ago, so this came out of nowhere. I have a liver biopsy scheduled for Monday because my liver labs are off, but I'm not sure how this could be connected to that...

Hi Beth, welcome! I think most people on here would agree that Pentasa does nothing for Crohns. I was on it for a while, it seems like doctors prescribe it because the side effects are minimal unlike many of the meds for this sucky disease. I certainly wouldn't take it if it hurt my kidneys or any other body parts. Has your doctor suggested trying any other meds? Are you seeing a Gastroenterologist? I've had the best luck with IBD specialists. Sounds like you are having a rough time, so sorry. The ER could help you if you are dehydrated from all the D, and could maybe give some pain meds. Fecal Calprotectin is a test that is turning out to be pretty accurate at measuring inflammation in the gut. Not everyone with Crohns has elevated CRP tests when they are flaring. I don't.

There are some liver problems associated with IBD, it's good that you are getting that checked out. Hope it's nothing, and that you feel better soon.

Yeah I've finally found a gastroenterologist I like. I've seen many and most I did not like, so I'm hopeful that this one turns out to be good. I've only seen him twice, but he seems way more responsive. He didn't really want to put me back on the Pentasa because he said it doesn't really do much, but he didn't want to put me on anything else until we get the liver things figured out because he said all the other meds say to not take them if you have liver problems. I tried 6-MP and reacted to it (fever) so that one's out. I also see a naturopath and she has me taking natural anti-inflammatories like curcumin and fish oil.

I really hope this clears up because I don't want them to make me postpone the biopsy because I'd really like to get the liver thing figured out so we can decide on a med to try for the Crohn's.

Hi Beth,

It's really hard to decide on a treatment plan until you find out exactly just what's going on inside.

I would recommend you get some diagnostics done. An MRE is very concise and safe and the least invasive. You might have a partial blockage going on, or it could be liver related, but we'd all just be guessing until you get a good look at things.

Agree with the previous poster. Pentasa is completely useless, and any GI that would prescribe it is way behind the times.

I agree with everyone. I would just say, there is nothing wrong with going to the ER to be safe. I've learned my lesson, I think it's too easy for us to adjust to pain with this disease and it makes it hard to discern the causes and severity so if u have any question in your mind you should either go or call your doctor. Hope you are able to get everything sorted out:)
