Hi. Ive just been diagnosed with crohns. Been on steroids for 2 weeks now. This is my 2nd week. But i am starting to get constipated again, badly, and cramps when i eat...these had started to ease....will this never go away or should it when the pills kick ib??
Im startin to think it had only eased because i had completely cleansed my system for the test

Can anyone give me any input?hanks

After initial diagnosis it will take a bit for your body to adjust to meds, so be patient. I'd also suggest you keep a food diary and try and stay away from anything that will cause constipation or cramping.
When I was first diagnosed, I was having a major flare, my gi advised me to stay away from fibrous foods and stick with easily digestible food like protein. I also went on the scd diet which I found very helpful.

Where is the extent of your inflammation?
What meds are you on aside from steroids?
Is they physician treating you an IBD specialist?


You should be on a medication that will be ok for long term. Steroids are not ok for long term.

Hi thanks for your replies....
I saw my consultant yestrrday to have the biopst results and he just confirmed the crohns. I havent been told anything else to be honest. Just that ill be on meds for life and when i finish steroids i might need something extra cause these dont seem to be working.
I think the extent of inflammation is low down. The place it hurts is nr my navel.constant.
The meds in on dikid are mez something. An anti inflammatory. I just feel ive been left in the dsrk about alot and thrown in at the deep end without being told anything.
My mum tried to ask questions but he couldnt wait to have us out the room. So fed up

Did he put you on mesalamines?
You really should start an immunomodulator at the least because Crohns tends to be a progressive disease and curbing inflammation early is key.
There is no evidence to support 5ASA in Crohns. It has done worse or equal to placebos in studies
Starting something after steroids seems odd. You would want the drug to be working asap.

This doctor sounds like a jerk. You were just diagnosed with a lifelong medical condition and he doesn't have the courtesy to give you any information?

Are you allowed to switch? I don't know how your health system works.

Do you have an IBD nurse? Call the office and insist on answers.

How is the medicine you are giving me going to help? What are the implications of this treatment? How are we going to assess that this treatment is effective? Are there any dietary or nutritional modifications I may need to make? Etc...

Yes there the ones..i would have thought something should have worked straight away too. Like with antibiotics they work next day. Im still in pain with it and its been 3 weeks now. Nearly 4.
He said that there was a nurse in training so she wasnt ready yet...what about all other patients with this disease. He just wanted us out the room. Good job my mum is bolshy and persisted in asking questions haha. I dont know if i can or not. I really hope i can. I dont want to be assigned to him for rest of my life. He has said i have to wait until sept..when steroids are finished and see if im any better. If not a differrnt drug would be introduced.

How long have you been diagnosed for? Do you still have pain or any flare ups at all. Or did they go atraight away with meds x
