Crohns and colitis?? Waiting on labs

Hi Folks,

I started on UC forum..but wanted to ask this question here.

Does anybody here have both colitis and crohns?

I have had left sided UC for 30 years involving the rectum, sigmoid, and distal colon.

The last scope showed my terminal ileum showed patchy granularity and ulceration. Isn't this consistent with crohns? The ascending colon and cecum looked fine.

I think this is new, or maybe they never went this far before?
They took multiple biopsies in the terminal ileum. Will they be able to determine if crohn with these biopsies?

They found likely benign but worrisome flat polyp..and mentioned the possibilty of colectomy. : (

Firstly, yes, they should be able to determine if it's Crohn's or not with the biopsies. It's very rare, but not impossible, for Crohn's and UC to co-exist. There have been a few case studies.

I possibly had both colitis and Crohn's. I had typical Crohn's in the terminal ileum, but the colitis part seems to have been more ambiguous. Made a thread about it on the UC board last year if you're interested.

Because I have Crohn's mainly in the colon (ileocolitis), I have had two GIs who at different times thought it may be UC instead. One of them tried to explain away the disease in the terminal ileum by saying it was a "backwash" of the UC, but the surgeon he referred me to did not agree with him since I already had at least one fistula as well as the disease in the colon being patchy among other things. It's not entirely unusual for the diseases to be hard to differentiate in some patients. It's more likely (now I'm just guessing) that you have Crohn's of the colon than that you have both Crohn's and Ulcerative colitis.
