Hello all,

I am currently on a low dose prednisone (hopefully stopping soon!), 6mp, and remicade.

I worry getting pregnant would be dangerous because of these meds, but also worry about hormonal birth control with higher doses (such as the pill). I'm curious if anyone has an IUD and how that works for them? Or just what you use for birth control and any noted side effects?

Just so you know, 6mp and remicade are both completely pregnancy-safe. I had both of my babies while doing Remicade the entire time, and they are fine. I was on two rounds of pred in the first pregnancy and a round of budesonide in the second. A co-worker of mine who also has Crohn's was on 6mp for her pregnancy and was great, too.

That having been said, I was on the pill without any problems - other than getting pregnant, lol! I can't do any IUD or any implant-types because I have a RV fistula and I've had a blood clot. So I get the depo-provera shot.

I was on a low dose birth control pill for several years with those meds and Crohns without issue. Actually think the pill helped when I was in a flare so I could skip my period.

I had to stop the pill because of my liver diagnosis. I am thinking about an IUD but haven't done it yet. There are a few on the UC board that have IUDs, hormonal and copper. All have been happy with them. If you search I had a thread asking about it on that board a couple !months ago.

The 6mp I take is mercaptopurine and on the bottle it says not to use if pregnant, which is why I am concerned.

Low dose birth control pill for me too, have for years and years. I even skip most of my periods, which helps with my Crohn's symptoms as well as headaches and stuff from my periods. No side effects.

Lots of people use 6mp and Remicade during pregnancy with no problems. I'm on Methotrexate, and that is a big different story. Can't do that, so it's important to have some good birth control on board with that one.

Christyjm, almost every single medication out there says not to take if pregnant. Most OTC medications say it, even. You can check with your GI, but I can 99% guarantee that Remi and 6mp are both pregnancy-safe. Yeah, MTX is definitely not pregnancy safe. :/ I'm not trying to say to NOT take bc, but more just for when you want to get pregnant. smile
