Eyesight fluctuations and Crohn's activity

An issue that I have been thinking of for 4 years. 4 years ago when I got a perianal abscess, I remember then that my eyes started to have excessive tears and tears would fall out of them. The opthalomogist then diagnosed it as dryness caused by pred and put me on steroid drops, anti-inflammatory drops and an eye lubricant for a month.That was the same duration that the abscess took to dry as I was put on abx pills and injections. I wear eye glasses so he measured my eyesight and found that it changed. A month later it went back to its normal measures which he attributed to diabetes. All tests of diabetes came back normal. Up till this day, neither he nor my GI could figure out the cause of my eyesight fluctuation.


Here, I'm back again. My fistula has reopened and it seems my Crohn's is acting up. I have been suffering from blurred vision especially in my left eye. Of course, I'm writing up my PhD thesis and stay for long hours staring at the computer screen but I take care of my eyes by blinking a lot and applying eye-lubricating drops.

Just a thought. Is there a relationship between Crohn's activity and eyesight fluctuations?

I'm glad you posted this as I've wondered about this too. My eyesight does have temporary changes and has done it for years, but I've figured it has to do with inflammation waxing and waning, though I know nothing about whether there's such a thing. Nowadays when I read too much, my eyes will blur so badly with my glasses on that I can't see to read, but that's a different deal as it clears up after about thirty minutes.

I have a lot of astigmatism and at my age, I'm getting more farsighted by the day it seems. I never had astigmatism until a month after a total hysterectomy, then one day everything was blurry. I was 30. One of my eye doctors said he'd seen that happen before in women and even recalled one patient where hers reversed. Another eye doctor said no way, no such thing happens. You can guess which one I believe.

JaSanne, I'm glad too that you share the same hunch if I might call it. I haven't talked about it with my GI yet. I will though I doubt he'd be convinced. Will see. All what both my GI and opthalomologist are concerned with is the pink eye. My GI told me before to rush to the opthalomologist once I suspect it.
Are you talking about a certain eye doctor? Sorry, I didn't get it.

I was talking about different optometrists I've used for my eyeglasses prescriptions. I don't think I ever discussed it with the opthalmologist I've seen for my episcleritis I've had off and on. He did believe that was Crohn's related, though he likely would have thought I was nutty about my changing vision hypothesis, knowing him.

Aha, got it. There a lot of these people. Wait until I ask my GI. I'll tell you about his reaction.
