I had the apple pie and custard, folks >_>
Unfortunately the evening didn't end on a high note, to put it mildly. For a start the apple pie was slightly disappointing: the filling wasn't piping hot and a few of the apple pieces were still hard (a cardinal culinary sin). The pastry and custard were nice, so I still enjoyed it but it wasn't food-of-the-gods tier.
And then things started to get fractious around the table. Had a fairly enjoyable and interesting discussion on what was the most intelligent animal. My brother made some innocuous comment about
how human activities had affected wildlife, and my dad launched into some bizarre spiel about
how nothing humans did could ever make any difference to the planet and then it turned into an argument about
global warming - yes, my dad is one of 'those' types: a climate change denier. He didn't used to be, but that's another story I won't go into there.
A bit later on, it was my turn to go into irrational meltdown mode when my mum brought up a book called We Need To Talk about
Kevin. She seems to shoehorn this bloody book into every family gathering; I'm honestly sick of hearing about
it and doubt I will ever read it, not least because "Kevin" sounds utterly implausible. Anyway, so my family starts talking their usual bollocks and I get triggered. Start raging incoherently about
parents not wanting to take any responsibility for how their children turn out and how nobody had any idea how angry I was a few years ago. I then got up from the table, walked out of the house, and drove home.
So yeah. Deffo not the best evening I've ever had, although weirdly enough my stomach was okay and I had - by my standards - a good night's sleep (I did take paracetamol and codeine before going to bed however). The awkward thing is, I usually go over to my parents on a Saturday and today is Saturday (obviously). I dunno whether to go now or not. I was a bit out of order, I know, but I can't see it was any worse than the usual drama queen tactics most of my family go in for. Just can't face dealing with my mum's guilt-tripping if she decides to take that attitude about
it.
As for the pain, it was quite bad earlier on but has largely subsided for now. Just gonna have a very light day today I reckon.

Edit: My mum phoned up. It was a tad awkward at first, but fortunately she was okay - just basically rolled her eyes and said something about
my brother and sister-in-law, to which I said they could hardly think I'm any weirder than I already am. But I've known her be a lot, lot worse, so that was good. Anyway, I'm going over there for dinner now. My brother (not the same one whose house I went to yesterday) is coming over as well - I get on much better with this brother.
