Hi Gerry, I have most of my discomfort in that area. I had my rectum out almost 40-yrs now but it never completely healed until about 10 years later when I had additional surgery to cut my griscilis (sp!) muscle behind my knee and rotate that living muscle up and pack the cavity that never healed (I think it's called, surprise surprise a griscilis flap surgery). Anyway that worked great until about ten years ago I started developing numerous fistulas exiting to my abdomen until finally I think the fistula output made it's way down to that former rectal area. I had severe pain until the interventional radiology dept. placed a drain into the cavity (an abscess, really) they could see on x-ray and were able to drain it. Felt much better!! Kept that drain in until it seemed nothing was draining through anymore and had the drain removed. Skip ahead another year and I guess my fistulas started draining there again as the pain returned. Then, I woke up one morning to find that the drainage found its way through where my rectum used to be. So now I have to wear a pad for that drainage, but my rear end is also very painful. So my guess, after this somewhat wordy trajectory, is that it could very well be an abscess that hasn't "surfaced".
I should also say that the drainage has a couple times resembled runny poo but normally isn't that bad. And when that happened I had those long-ago feelings of urgency before it came out.
Oh, just luv'n this body of mine!!!
