Do I have to take a referral doctor?

My GI retired and I am to see a new GI on Monday? What if this new doctor is not what I want or hoping for?
Do I have to take him on as my new GI or do I have a choice to refuse him if I see something is off? Will I get billed for the appointment? Will my family doctor be upset with me, since he sent in a referral? Just wondering if anyone else went through this and if everything ended up okay in the end regardless of the choice that is made?
What if my family doctor refuses to refer me to another??

You will be billed for the appointment. You can choose to go to another GI if it is okay with your insurance. Just explain to your PCP that you didn't feel comfortable with that GI and you would like to try another. If that upsets your PCP, then honestly you need a new PCP!

I saw 5 different ones before I found one I was comfortable with. My PCP had no problem making the referrals either. I would keep the appt because you may end up liking this dr. You can go online to your insurance & see who is on your plan & check them out.

Dorri, I went through a similar situation last year when my GI left the area and he actually assigned me to another Dr. in the practice. I wasn't thrilled that I didn't get to choose but so far it seems to be going ok.

And I second Susie, check with your insurance to see who is available to you. That's what their customer service is there for. good luck!
