Hi, hope you are all doing well. I'm usually over on the UC board but they're not experienced in MTX so I am hoping someone over here can give me some advice and share their experiences with MTX. I will likely be starting soon as I can't take Imuran and the GI thinks this is a better option.

Do you know if there's a reason they recommend an injection vs oral?

My GI said I'd be on folic acid but won't take it the day of the injection, is that everyone's experience and do you know why? Perhaps I misheard him as I did some research and most take it daily.

How often do you get blood-work?

How are the side effects? I know nausea is common, does that go away and is it typical? What about fatigue?

For those on it with Humira can you take it on the same day?

Sorry for the blast of questions but I like to research everything possible prior to going on a new med and want some real life experiences. Thanks so much for any feedback you can provide and any additional information that can provide from your experience.

Mrs Brady, many in the RA forum are on MTX. You did hear the dr correctly about no folic acid on the day you take the MTX. Apparently it interferes with it in some way. Some of the people over there had nausea & some do not. The ones that experienced nausea said it went away in a week or so. They mentioned blood work but not how often. I would discuss this with the dr & same with Humira injections. I hope I have helped a little.

Thanks Susie! I have a friend with RA and he takes it orally so I picked his brain, didn't think to pop over to that board so thanks for the suggestion!

I've heard that injections are less likely to cause nausea than tablets. I didn't have any nausea, but felt a bit rough the day after the injection.

I recall something about not taking folic acid on the same day as the MTX, but can't remember why. I think I took it once a week, but memory is a bit hazy on that one, sorry.

Probably got bloods every 3 months, the same as with 6MP and azathioprine, but I wasn't on it that long.

Not many side-effects for me. Just the feeling rough the day after, like a slight hungover feeling. As for taking it on the same day as Humira, it should be okay, but talk to your doctor about it.

Thanks for the feedback NCOT. How is the Entyvio working for you? I know you have had a rough go of it with the different meds. Hope you are doing well.

Thanks Mrs Brady. Well, I've been on Entyvio for almost exactly one year and am having my 8th infusion next week, and I'm still not sure :-/ I had a pelvic MRI scan recently which I haven't had the results of yet. My bloodwork is apparently fairly good, but my symptoms aren't great. Still having a lot of stomach issues and am not sure if that's down to active Crohn's, IBS, SIBO, or what.

At any rate my GI is going to switch me to Stelara, which I hope has more of an effect.

That seems to be the case for a lot of people on Entyvio based on what I've read. Some people get great results and others marginal and it takes quite a while to kick in. Funny you should mention that you're not sure what to attribute the symptoms to. I feel like that, I convinced myself that I had IBS in addition to IBD for over a month before finally giving into the harsh reality that I was flaring. I'll be anxious to hear your results on Stelara, seems promising for Crohn's. I hope it's your magic elixir!

Well I had a pill cam which showed active disease, but that was back in January of this year. I feel like my symptoms haven't changed much since then, but it's hard to tell, especially with a memory as terrible as mine. Thank you! I'm cautiously optimistic about Stelara - it seems like it's somewhat better for Crohn's than Entyvio is. Plus as it's a systemic biologic, I'm hoping it will kill two birds with one stone and knock the uveitis on the head as well - I can't get off the steroid eye drops because it keeps on coming back.

I have been on MTX since my resection in 2009. 15mg. by injection weekly. No nausea and no side effects. I think I was getting bloodwork done monthly initially but now every three months. Just saw a new GP who questioned my taking folic acid on the day of injection but had discussed it with my GI doctor and he said it was OK. No active sign of disease since my surgery so have no been on the forum for quite some time.

Bammer, that's great to hear. When adding any new med I get extremely nervous and hearing success stories really helps to calm my fears. I am glad you are doing so well!
