Hello Everyone,

Can anyone who has had an ileostomy surgery tell me about how long it took you to recover?

How long before you were able to resume to a normal lifestyle? Walk, run, swim? Pick up your kids in your arms etc

You would probably get more replies on the Ostomy board to be honest. But in my case I was walking around the day after my surgery. Don't run or swim, so don't know about those. You're meant to give it 6 weeks before you pick up anything heavier than a couple of pounds - you don't want to risk a hernia by lifting heavy stuff too soon.

For just a colectomy/leave the rectum or proctocolectomy/rectum and anus out at the same time?

Those who have just a coletomy are usually up and about and resuming normal activity quicker.

My colon resection loop ileostomy - in the hospital 4 days, taking daily walks by day 2, going out to lunch and shopping 1 week post op. I did doctor approved exercise by week 4.

My proctocolectomy was a bigger surgery and recovery. In the hospitals 10 days, wasn't comfortable going for walks put out and about until about 3-4 weeks post op. Wasn't exercising more than walks until about 8 weeks post op. I didn't start swimming until 12 weeks post op.

Standard doctor timeline for resuming more normal eating and exercise is 6 weeks
