enema prior to MRI?

Hi everyone,

Hope you've all had a Christmas of remission!

I have an MRI tomorrow to determine the state of my fistulas and the instructions state I'm to do an enema tonight. I've never heard of this.

Anyone else?

Do you have to drink barium? I've had MRI and MRE, and no enema.

No barium. Just enema.

I likely won't do it. I don't want anything irritating my rectum and causing a flare. Things with my bowel are going incredibly well. I normally have 2 bm's in the morning anyway. I also don't want anything going through my fistula....(If I have them....)

Just wondered if they were going to shove something up my butt during MRI??? Never heard of this.

They didn't for me, but they did want to inject a contrast into my arm, which I declined. They said the contrast can make you have to go & I already had to go constantly, so it was too risky for me. I didn't want to have any trouble driving home. The only time I had them put fluid in my butt was when I had a pouchoscopy.

I've never had an enema prior to an MRI but when I had a dynamic pelvis MRI, they gave me a contrast enema during the procedure. This kind of MRI was ordered because I was then suffering from sudden prolonged constipation which I don't think is your case. I had several fistula MRIs and had never had any preps apart from fasting for four hours.
