Minnie,
Sorry to hear you're having such back pain. Like most things, it's really hard to say until you get some imaging done. You really need an MRI. Backs a very complicated. It could be an acute attack from a nerve compression, a ligament stretch, sciatica or simply a soft tissue injury. A simple unbalanced move can put your back out of sync and cause spasms.
Until you get in to your Doctor, try some passive stretching, use an ice pack a couple of times a day. Ice cubes in a wet towel for 13-15 minutes. Often, things will calm down in a few days, but could be a couple of weeks. Hope you're feeling better soon.

73monte, thank you. I called my GI and he attributed this stiffness to the profound fatigue Imuran has caused me. I'm on a two week leave until Imuran clears my system and I regain my energy. I'll wait and if this stiffness persists, I'll see an orthopedist.
