I would suggest getting a referral to an endocrinologist ..... you may be pre-diabetic, which many times is not considered full-blown diabetic, and your GP is over-reacting a bit by labeling you "diabetic". Once you sit down with a specialist in diabetes type 1 (baby, child) or 2 (adult-onset), get your A1C read again, you can start to relax with this whole thing. I've seen an endocrinologist for 19 years. They are internists as well. You'll get a complete and truthful "diagnosis" and be led to either continue your lifestyle as you've known it - or tweak it a bit to meet the demands of diabetes. Either way, you will know for sure. Good fortune to you. Do this soon. And you won't have to worry; your mind will be put at ease. These are my words, "Diabetes is not a death sentence, it is the gateway to better understanding of how our bodies work to handle our insulin and give us life to the utmost".

OK...I am prepared with my last 10 tests for A1C to show that I have never reached the landmark where diabetes is diagnosed. I am in the range as potential for diabetes (because they lowered the range some time ago and don't get me going on why I think the medical community did that). My long time GP said at my last visit that he would not remove the diagnosis Diabetes from my record. He said you need to exercise more---I said yup, but I am not diabetic. He said you need to eat higher fiber and more vegetables--I said have you ever met me? (literally said that to him and he had no response---high fiber has put me in the ER three times!).
My last eye appointment, the eye doctor said he was going to do some things because I was diabetic---I explained I was not a diabetic and why...he was furious because it changes how he treats a patient.
So...I have my tests from yesterday ready for my visit next week. Any recommendations on how to approach this? GP has always been good, but he is succumbing to being owned by the big corporate teaching hospital more every time.
