Remicade infusion pre-meds?

My Daughter always gets the premeds before each infusion. Today, they told her that the premeds are on some kind of back order, and they don't have them. They offered to substitute with 25mgs. of Prednisone. I didn't think this was a good idea, and she didn't want that either so is now having her infusions without premeds.

Should there be any concerns? She has never had any post infusion issues, other than sometimes a bit tired. The infusion clinic nurse did assure her that the premeds aren't big issue.

Not all gi's use premeds with Remicade. When I was on Remicade my first two infusions went fine. It was the third one that I had a reaction. The infusion was stopped, I was given premeds & then they resumed the infusion at a much slower rate. My gi said usually if a patient has a reaction it's by the third infusion. I have seen some members say they take an OTC antihistamine 45 minutes before the infusion & their dr was ok with it. My premeds consisted of IV Benadryl & soluble medrol.

I know it's upsetting for you, but let's hope she does fine.

You're very perceptive. It did throw me for a loop this morning. She seems fine. Her infusion went normally. Thanks again for taking the time, and for the reassurance.

73monte, so glad to read the infusion went well. It can be nerve wracking for many of us when there is a sudden change like this.
