My daughter has developed an infection on one of her wisdom teeth. The bottom two are impacted, and the Dentist said that the roots are hooked, and will have to be removed under general anesthetic. He started her on antibiotics today as well. Also turns out that she seems to have a case of thrush from the last time she was on antibiotics for strep throat just weeks ago.

She had been having nasal and throat issues, that she thought might be allergies, but we now think it's the thrush that might have been causing the symptoms, so we'll see. She's now on Nystantin for that.

Now waiting for a referral for surgery. Anyone been through this before and have any advice? I'm concerned that this will all have to go around her next Remicade infusion. Hope I was concise enough, just looking for any advice I can get.

So I had the same issue with my wisdom teeth - they were impacted on the top because they grew in slightly crooked but I had braces, so they couldn't actually come in and grew back up and attached to the bone at my nasal cavity. I also had mine done under general anesthetic.

It was before I had Crohn's, when I was in high school, so like 15 years ago at least. I remember it being painful afterwards, but not too bad.

Is she taking a probiotic with the antibiotics?

Not on any probiotics. Would it be a good idea to help with the after effects of antibiotics? It seems that every time she's had to be on them, she'll either get thrush or some other issue. Any recommendation on a particular brand/type of Probiotic?

Oh yeah, probiotics are great to help balance things out. I strongly recommend Florastor, which is yeast-based and is the most effective. It's a bit expensive though. So if you get a different probiotic, you need to take it halfway between antibiotic doses.

Thanks so much for the advice. Will definitely get some Florastor today. The other issue she's had after taking antibiotics is yeast infections. Hope this will lessen the chances of that recurring as well. Getting this thrush under control will help immensely. She's taking Nystantin for it, but have heard Diflucan might be a better choice.

Nystantin has always helped when I've gotten thrush, I don't think I've ever been given anything else. Also best to avoid sugary foods, and to brush immediately after eating. Note that thrush is a type of yeast infection, so the probiotic will help with that as well.

Florastor is the probiotic my dr recommends any time I have to take an antibiotic. She needs to wait at least 2 hours after taking the antibiotic before taking it too.

Look online for an ice/cold pack that will wrap around her face. These work great to help keep the swelling & pain down. My neighbor made one for her daughter that she wore & she had very little swelling which knocked her pain level down a great deal.

20 years ago, after I was diagnosed of Chron's, I had my wisdom teeth pulled. I cannot remember if I was under general anesthesia or local anesthesia back then. But I think it was local anesthesia. The pain was horrible afterwards and my face swelled visibly.

Last year I had dental implant with bone grafting. I was under local anesthesia. The doctor gave me some prescription strength pain-killer. I did not take it because I was worried about it being additive. So instead I took maximum strength Tylenol. I could not sleep for a couple of nights due to pain. But then it got better and better.
