After having numerous horrible colonoscopy preps I thought there has to be a better way and there is! It still is not fun but it is not traumatic like golytely or colite or suprep.
This time, I was prescribed miralax two capfuls morning and evening two days and three days prior. I ate a low residue diet like scrambled eggs, noodles, and anything that is soft the day before the prep started. I was told to get 3 bottles of magnesium citrate (.98) cents each.
Last prep was $349 dollars at the pharmacy, I think it was Golytely (it should be called go-violently). LOL. This time it was 3 bucks. I did not do the miralax at all. As I said the day prior I ate a light low residue diet. The day of prep I drink clear liquids, banana Popsicles, chicken broth, the usual. I did not start until 7 PM. Drank the first bottle of magnesium citrate through a straw as the pharmacy told me it would go down easier. I got the cherry flavored, it was pretty tart it was kind of salty tasting but it really wasn’t bad. The second bottle I just killed in one drink, no straw. That was the best method for me. Get it cold in the fridge first.
It took about
an hour for it to start working it’s magic and a couple of hours later I drank the second bottle. From eating a light diet the previous day there really wasn’t much work to do so to speak.
From the previous experiences I really felt that this did not work and I had made a mistake. It was just too easy this time.
I did not drink the 3rd bottle as I had a 6:00 a.m. appointment and had to get up at 4 a.m. to make there on time so there was not time and it was not necessary.
Upon awakening after my colonoscopy and reading the report it was stated that the prep was excellent. It shows pictures of each part of the colon and all were squeaky clean.
I have a good friend who lost his father and his father’s twin brother (which of course is his uncle) to colon cancer when they were 50 years old. He has had about
25 colonoscopies since then as he was at such high risk. After having had 25 of them he told me this is the way that he preps so I thought I would try it too.
While it is still not pleasant it is not a traumatic experience like the other ones. When just getting prepared to have a 10 foot camera snaked up your butt is far, far worse than the actual procedure, well that is traumatic. This worked for me as well as all the other tortures I went through on the other preps and was not near as bad. I think the light diet prior to prep day was a factor as well.....
I can’t promise the results for everyone but I know now of two people who have used it successfully and had a lot less pain and anguish. Good luck to all who have the procedure.......
