Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has ever had issues with uncontrollable gas. I have the worse bloating and then uncomfortable gas. It has created the most humiliating situations for me. I just do not know what to do to control it. I am on Stelara for crohn’s colitis. But it is not helping. I have a constant pain on the left side of the buttocks and I don’t know what is causing it. I am on a new job and have already had issues with the gas….talk about embarrassing. I just do not know what to do…I have to work. It’s so depressing. I tried bentyl and it helps a bit; however, it also makes me sleepy.

My first guess would be dietary. Would go with a trial and error approach, but first might suspect lactose intolerance. Very common, and usually occurs in early adulthood. Gluten would be something else to consider. You can get a gluten sensitivity test, or as I mentioned, you could start with doing your won elimination and see what happens. Just guessing after those suggestions, but perhaps too much fiber? You could opt for a food allergy test to see if there's something there.

Thanks. I did see a dietician who did a blood spot test that showed issues with gluten, casein (milk protein) and wheat. I already knew that I was badly lactose intolerant so I try to stay away from dairy. I have been watching my diet lately so not sure what causes the issue when I’m watching my diet. I too think that foods play a big part, and so does constipation.

Try a strict gf. diary free diet for a good 2-3 months and see if that helps. Could also look into the specific carbohydrate diet if you haven't already. Maybe skip breakfast on work days? I know there was a type of underwear that absorbs odours....not sure if it's still around.

Also activated charcoal helped me. But you can't take it close to meds or vitamins. Definitely reduced my bloating.

It's very hard to work with this disease. I empathize.

Curious about the pain in the left buttock. It could be an abscess....try sitz baths and see your GI for an MRI/CT.

I had trouble with major bloat and gas in the past, but I mostly worked alone in my mail truck😋 mine was based on all the resections I had and just gut bugs fighting for dominance. Sometimes I would pass gas every minute of the day. Once in the air force my workmates held me out the back door of a bus because they could smell them through their gas masks! Was on a lot of prednisone at the time. Always thought that didn't help the situation.😁

Before I was diagnosed of Crohn's, I had more gas than a normal person would, especially in the years preceding my diagnosis. I am also lactose intolerant, but I found that onions can produce a lot of gas too. When you said "uncontrollable gas", I suspect that has something to do with your rectum. It could be inflammation in your rectum. I do not have inflammation in my rectum, so I can control it. Have you talked to your doctor about potential inflammation in you rectum?

I suggest that you do an internet search of the top 10 foods that can cause gas. I did this years ago & was shocked, back then the top 2 offenders was black pepper & broccoli. If you eat any of the foods on the list you probably found your cause. Good luck.

Thanks for all of the responses. I do think that I need to go back super strict with my diet. That does mean no onions or garlic, not any of the vegetables that I like. I even think that most carbs cause this issue to get worse. I will reach out to my doctor about the possibility of inflammation in the rectum. I initially was dx’d with left sided colitis but then the biopsy changed to crohn’s colitis.
