Hi folks,

Got an embarassing problem here that I'd like to address.  My crohn's has been miserable for the past two months, after having been pulled off immuran.  I still take Remicade (400mg) every 6 weeks but it seems to be doing nothing lately.  It's been 3 and 1/2 years on the Remicade and I think I've seen the last of it's working ability.  I've been having terrible bowel cramps with diaherra, with quite a bit of blood. Last night, I couldn't get the bleeding to stop.  The pooping had stopped but the blood just kept coming and coming.  Like everyone, I do have hemoroids and have had them burst and bleed before but this was different.  There was just a hell of a lot of blood and it went on for 50 mins.  I was going to go to outpatience at the hospital if it continued past an hour... which was probably way too long to have waited in the first place but I didn't want to look like an idiot, going in and saying, "Hi, my ass won't stop bleeding!"  In anycase, today, I'm really weak, stomach sick with nausea and feeling run down.  Has anyone else had this kind of bleeding?  What could have let go and made me bleed like this?  I'd appreciate any feed back if someone has any comments.  Thanks guys, this forum is a godsend for questions that are hard to address.

I have had tons of rectal bleeding, but not to go on noticeably for almost an hour like you described. No wonder you feel like garbage today. You poor thing. Put a call in to your GI asap - losing blood is no minor thing, that's a SERIOUS issue. I hope someone else will come along and post something more helpful. I'm sending good thoughts your way.

Hi Marlene-Do you thik you might have a fissure or an abscess? Those are my only ideas (thinking of my own history)You should go to the Dr. and have it checked out.

I hope you feel better soon-let us know what happens.

Thanks for your reply!  I have had fissures in the past, as well as abcesses.  I've had 8 operations due to the abcesses turning into fistulas and had the seton sutures out in and out over a period of 1 1/2 years.  The last seton came out 20 months ago.  With my abcesses, I had a lot of peri-anal swelling - to the point that I thought I was Sigourny Weaver in Aliens and having an alien come out of my butt!  However, this time, there is no swelling like that.  Is it possible to have one high enough in the rectum that the swelling isn't noticable from the outside?  I'm not sure...  I wonder if a fissure could be deep enough to cause so much bleeding?  I haven't a clue.  I did get an apt with my family doc for this afternoon but have not heard back from my GI in the city as they are slower getting back to patients.  Not sure what my family doc can do but I'll ask him the same questions you have about the fissures or abcesses.  I appreciate your help!  Thank you!  I'm sending good thought your way too, in hopes of a baby as your posting mentionned.  Take care!

With Crohn's you can get GI bleeds which can be very dangerous. I was hospitalized with bleeding and lost half of the blood in my body. Basically I had an ulcer in my TI that caused the bleeding, they had to go in (unprepped colonoscopy) and fix it.

I would let your doctor know about the bleeding, after what happened to me it's not something I'll ever ignore again!

Hi Marelene-
When I get abscesses, they are pretty deep and it usually takes a while for them too "show" at the surface. about 10 days before I get an abscess, I get really bad constipation. So I think it is possible that you may not know yet. I hope you don't have one though!

Sounds like you've been through the ringer,too! Hope you get relief soon. Let us know how you make out at the Dr.

I am so sorry that you're bleeding. sad

That happened to me a year ago, and a colonoscopy showed that I was in a severe flare.

I hope that's not the case for you.

Hi folks

A little update on the rectal bleeding.  I had my Remicade infusion on Friday and then seen a new GI to me as my fellow is constantly on vacation.  He, and a new to me nurse, went over the last few months of symptoms since I've been off my immuram and decided to put me back on it but at 1/3 of my original dose.  That, with predizone.  They tried to do a scope but my rectum was clenching like crasy and they could not get it in... ouch!  Thus, they will see me again this week with a flex sig and see where the bleeding is coming from.  Blood tests on Thursday after Tuesday nights bleed were not too bad but Friday bottomed out.  Strange, it takes a few days for a bleed to register like that. Still bleeding but not near like Tuesday night.  I've been having a lot of abdom. pain and vomiting thus the doc concluded that I am in a flare (duhhh)  I know its not fair to be crabby and say things like duhhh but I have been after my doc since May once I went off the immuran that things were not good and getting progressivly worse and he likes to wait it out and see where things go.  With the rashes and bruises on my face and neck in June from becoming allergic to all my make up, yeast infection etc... (this all from my system going nuts without the immuram), I'm kinda tired.  Your system, once surpressed for a long time on a med such as immuram, will apparently do all sorts of nutty things once it is gone.  With the low does, I hope things go back to some sense of normal.  I've built up antibodies from 4 years now of Remicade so the doc wants to get me on Humera right away.  That's great news to me!  I'll keep you posted on what the scope turns up and where the bleeding is coming from as they rulled out lower rectal hemoroides.  Boy, this stuff just always seems to stay interesting!  Crohns people must have the best stories!  Thank you to everyone of you!Marlene

I was hospitalized recently for bleeding out half my blood volume as well (vomitting that night as well). the doctors don't really know why it happened, but one speculation is that an ulcer got close enough to an artery to cause problems. Previously I bled about 6 ounces (a few years back) but my doctor at the time said that was ok so long as it did not continue. This time I lost chunks of jelly-like blood that I learned were clots. I was nauseated and almost passed out from the blood loss. Do not let embarrassment stop you from seeking medical care! I walked into the ER and just said I had Crohn's and didn't stop bleeding. That was all I had to say...
