Does anyone receive Remicade through a Port-a-cath?

I am about to start taking the drug REMICADE.  Sadly I don't have the best veins around, so my physician wants me to have a PORT-A-Cath put in.  No one seems to know much about the use of a port with Remicade.  The company won't answer any question about it.  So I'm asking if anyone out there is taking Remicade with the use of a PORT?  How is it working for you?

I had my port placed on July 5th of this year and have no regrets. I've had 2 remi's since then and it goes sooo much easier, no multiple sticks, no searching for an hour for a vein, I used to dread going in for infusions because of the multiple needle sticks, now its a breeze.


Did they say what type of port it was going to be? Mine is a Bard Power Port, its about the size of a quarter and it sticks about 1/2 inch up under the skin. I really don't even notice it except if the seat belt rubs it or it gets bumped. I do get it flushed every 4 weeks.


Overall, I'm glad that I got one, its made the remicade an easier process, if you have any other questions I'll be happy to answer them. Good luck and keep us posted!!!

hello whiporwill3,, not a port but a hickman catheter. i know , close but no cigar. i have known people that have done it and have not reported any problems.

I have a port a cath and boy did it ever make my Remicade infusions go great. I hd bad veins to begin with and Remicade finished the, off. To the point, once when my vein blew Remicade leaked out all over my clothes. My hands were under blankets and the nurse never checked. We had no idea how much Remicade I actually got. A week later we figured out not much, I ended up in the hospital for a week in a bad flare. I had a port placed before my next infusions which I got them every 4 weeks. Susie
