Problem with Remicade if allergic to animals?

Do I understand correctly that Remicade is made partly of mouse protein? If that's true, has anyone with animal allergies had trouble taking it? My doc wants to discuss starting Remicade but I know I am mildly allergic to cats, dogs, horses (although I live with 2 cats and a poodle dog!)

I am allergic to acts and dogs and got remicade. Yes there is maouse proyein or something in it. I worked at an animal hospital with my allergies and have pets of my own. They premed with benadryl and tylenol unless they use claratin (1 place I went used that 1st then benadryl if needed. There is a nurse on hand for any reactions tell them right away if you are itchy or feel funny

Hi yes Remicade is made with mouse protein. I have been on it for over 2 years and doing fine.
The only side effect is I have a craving for cheese afterwards. LOL

I have TONS of allergies. Many animal, some food, medications... I had an allergic reaction to my first and 2nd infusion so far (third scheduled soon) and they just stopped the infusion, administered more benedryl and then restarted the infusion at a slower rate. This was with me being premedicated with tylenol, hydrocortisone, and benedryl... but they had it under control.

you should be fine! if you have a reaction, they will take care of it, just make sure you tell them if you have trouble breathing, are itchy, shaky, sweaty or just don't feel right.

I was under the impression that remicade was made out of a substance that mimics mouse protein but is not actually mouse protein. Maybe I am incorrect but I heard this from my remicade nurse.....Don't flame me here! :-) Just repeating what I was told.

This is a question I've been meaning to ask. Call me thick ..................but why is it when we have a reaction to some anti-biotics and or other types of medication etc it gets noted on your records, some get to wear a medic alert bracelet, and it is indeed a life threatening situation if you are ever administered it again and yet people break out in hives have trouble breathing loads of other alergic reactions and they dose you up with tylenol or benadryl and continue administering Remicade.

Just wondering.

I had the same question since I was bitten by a mouse as a child and worried that I'd built up antibodies. My rheumatologist told me in my case that there would not have been enough mouse protein on the teeth of said offending mouse for me to build up any antibodies.

I know in the Remicade patient information, it does state that if you are allergic to mice, you shouldn't take Remicade, but nothing about other animals.

Remicade is made up of about 75% human antibody and 25% mouse antibody. The Remicade literature states that you should not take it if allergic to mouse PROTEIN, not mice. Allergy to dogs or cats, farm animals, or humans should not prevent you from receiving Remicade.

I am extremely allergic to any animal with any fur and have taken Remicade for seven years since it first came out and never had a problem!  I'm not currently taking it because it's starting to not work so well because I'm building up antibodies to it.  I'm trying Humira but's it's not working nearly as well!  Anyway, no worries, but I hope it does for you what it did for me.  It really gave me my life back and I never had any problems.
