Anyone else having bacterial overgrowth issues?  This has only happened post-surgery for me and it's happening rather frequently despite the fact that I take a probiotic everyday.

I'm starting another round of Rifaximin tonight, which is fine except it costs me $80 for the script. Anyone have any other thoughts or things that work for them.  Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Rifaximin is the name brand for Xifaxan isn't it? I've been taking Xifaxan for about 14 months as an off label use for CD. Its helps with my D. Didn't know it was also used for bacterial overgrowth? But while my insurance was putting up a stink for a bit last summer, I was off the xifaxan. I got Thrush, which is a bacterial overgrowth in the mouth. Maybe they are connected and I should blame my insurance company for making me miserable.

I've been on Xifaxin for almost a year and a half. Doseages have varied from 3 bid to one a day. My doctor and I have concluded that bacteria is my problem. There's just one thing that doesn't add up....I have never had anything happen that would indicate a bacterial overgrowth! I don't even have D! So right now my maintenence dose is 2 bid. I may try to go down to 1 bid, we'll see. Thank goodness my insurence pays without question. (They were paying almost $800 for the 2 tid script.)

Does your insurance not pay? Could you get your dr. to talk to them? Xifaxin is on the rise in scripts for CD. Salix (makers of X) have studies out showing it helps in CD, and I think they are in the middle of doing more.

By the way, this is the only med that has worked for me. 5-ASAs were a joke and lots of $ down the drain. Entocort was the same. Xifaxin was the last option before going on to a biologic.

McToot! glad to see ya. i am having a bit right now.. had one of my 105 fevers over the weekend while i was on amoxacillin . killed everything. now the bad guys are winning at the moment and im outgasing about every minute or two while awake and almost the same while asleep till it quits early in the morning. goodness what a pain in the butt. but you know i been doing this for so long and i have never found anything but more antibiotics that help, but then it just starts all over when you quit again..


Zanne . for info thrush is NOT bacterial overgrowth, it isa YEAST infection, brought on by the LACK of bacteria to keep it in check, often come with recent antibiotic use especially for women in other places:).
