Anyone have any experience in treating a fistula? I am scheduling surgery for an internal hemmroid and I think I may also have an external fistula which I thought was a hemmroid. My PCP has referred me to a general surgeon. Shouldn't I see a specialist first? I am also becoming more aware that fistulas are more common with crohns vs UC which now makes me think my diagnosis last year may have been wrong. Thanks

Hi I have had fistula to skin on lower abd. after surgery and another from large to small bowel. Went on Rem. healed my skin fis. not sure about other one. There are people here who have had them in the area you have someone will probably be along to talk about it .Best Wishes with it. lol gail

thanks gachrons im being told not to deal with a general surgeon but to seek out a good colorectal surgeon. im also going to have my diagnosis reexamined. thanks

i've had terrible time with anal fistula's so i defenitly feel for you.  My Gi doc referred me to a colo. rectal surgeon and she has been taking care of trying to treat them.  You really should have the GI and surgeon work hand in hand deciding what the best course of action is for you.  And heads up these things stink and are very very hard to get rid of and even if you do get rid of them they can easily come back  =(

I had a fistula similar to yours (perianal area is where it came out), and it was terrible--got infected and became an abscess. (I have Crohn's disease as well).

Are you on Remicade? I went on Remicade shortly after getting this fistula, because Remicade is highly recommended for people with fistulizing Crohn's as it has been shown to aid in healing them.

After being on Remicade only 3 months, my fistula healed shut, and has not recurred (nor have I gotten any new ones) ever since being on this drug. Perhaps talk to your GI about starting Remicade--if you have fistulas, your Crohn's is likely severe and Remicade should be an option for you. I love the drug, been on it 8 years + with no side effects or allergic reactions (I am 26, female, Crohn's since age 15).
